mobil1 12 month oil?

Most manufacturers have gone to 10k between changes now.... I go longer myself.

If you live down dusty roads maybe 5k but otherwise 10k or more should be fine... I go 25 - 30k with no problems

 

I change my filter when I change my oil.

I was using 0w-30w on my 2006 prius's, I now use 0w-20w on my 2010 & 2013 Avalon & 2016 Tacoma pickup

But you can't use just oil, nor a blend, it must be pure synthetic and signature series

I personally prefer to always follow the manufacturer's recommended oil replacement schedule. Everything I've ever read about an automobile's longevity always points to regular oil changes per the manufacturer's recommendation. Compared to every other major maintenance item, oil is cheap. If I'm using my car very infrequently, then I would be alright with one year oil change intervals. Otherwise, why not just spend the $30-$50 and be done with it?

 

The added cost of another PM or two per year is FAR outweighed by the security of knowing that the belts, hoses, lights, brakes and tires are in good repair; as compared to only having these and other items evaluated annually.

Nothing wrong with extended oil drains under ideal conditions with quality synthetic oil, but there is more to a good PM than just a couple quarts of oil and a filter.

 

how many miles on her, and how many miles per year do you drive?

 

I drive my Prius 800 miles in California every week. For the first 200,000 miles I change the oil every 5000 miles it drove me crazy. Then I decided to go with Castrol's edge synthetic oil, changing the Bausch oil filter every time I change the oil at 10,000 miles. The engine made it to 380,000 miles before it failed. Examination of the engine prove that it had died from overheating due to failure of the radiator not due to the engine oil. So what I can tell you is that if you drive your Prius a lot a quality oil filter can easily keep that engine oil nice and clean for 10,000 miles and that is synthetic oil is the way to go!

Interesting. I had M1 actually save an engine from destruction due to a severe overheating event. It kept the rings and pistons cool enough (due to friction control and oil's second job of cooling) to prevent it from seizing. The Valve Cover was melted to the point you could see the individual rocker arm impressions. The only "failure" from this unfortunate event was the plastic spring in the PCV valve that melted causing HORRIBLE oil consumption. For about $6 in a new PCV and $50 for a new VC, the engine was fixed. Replacing the upper radiator hose cured the overheating - due to an unseeable pinhole leak in it.

 

I'm betting the 20k miles is conservative for the Annual Protection oil. Mobil doesn't take any chances as they warrant against oil related failure....

 

EP is rated for 15k at half the price, and any synthetic should go a year. The marketing on this product is BS.

 

It is somewhat dependent on TBN. Amsoil Signature, warranted starting after the second oil change with their oil, has a 12.6 for 25k miles or one year. I use Mobil 1 0W-40 on Mercedes/Smart vehicles in the household. It is rated for 1 yr or 10k miles, TBN 12.6. The TBN of EP and Annual Protection are hidden. I am sure they are higher. Check the video about Annual Protection. The results after 120k miles of 20k interval changes are impressive.

 

Thats the craziest UOA I have ever seen. It has a huge amount of calcium even after 27,000 miles and it shows no metal wear whatsoever. I can't imagine how big the calcium pack was to begin with. Calcium gets depleted as it ages to mitigate acid. Thats why its there as an additive. But its a wear agent also. So it has a huge amount of calcium and no wear. It makes no sense at all. Its magical.

The report is pretty useless without a TAN though.

 

Isn't TBN good enough?

The iron wear of 37 per 25K miles seems consistent with what I got recently: 11 per 11K miles.

 

No baseline number has nothing to do with Total Acid Number.

 

That's over my head but if it helps that's in lower fort worth area, the dirt is limestone everywhere, unless you import topsoil from the river bottom or sand pit, everything is limestone plate around there if you try to dig.

 

No I was mentioning the calcium detected in your UOA. That's a addictive pack used to extend the usable life of the oil. It mitigates acid buildup in the oil. That phenomenon is measured by a TAN test. Really the most important measurement of any uoa. High acid level increased wear. But the trade off is a little higher metal wear as calcium is a wear against to some extent. Your uoa is has the best of both worlds.

Well for what it's worth but they do have considerable amount of consumptive oil use, I assumed that was pretty normal for a car between 200 and 300 K.
It's possible there may be less consumptive use with more frequent oil changes I don't know.
