We have a 2017 Prius 3. We have a dash camera located in the mirror. We could get power from the cigarette lighter, but then we would have a long cable hanging. We would like to get power from the overhead console. Any suggestions?
If you do that, you need to use a transformer/power supply that came WITH the camera.....or is made for that use. And ......simple transformers do NOT work with DC power. Was that a typo when you said the camera is IN the mirror ? Did it come with the car.....or the mirror ??
A 12vdc to 5vdc solid state converter is cheap and easy to find on eBay. I do not know about the availability of 12v in the overhead. Since the garage door opener is up there, I would guess that 12v is also.
To Sam Spade: Sorry for not replying to all your message. I have a step down transformer ordered. I will tap into a 12VDC source in the dome light area and plug in the transformer. From there I will power the mirror mounted camera. The dash cam will store video on a 200 + GB card. The car did not come with a dash cam, I got it in China. Please consider my question answered and many thanks
Great. Looks like you have a good plan. BUT......referring to the part you ordered as a "step down transformer" is wrong and confusing. If it really IS just a transformer, it will NOT work for what you need. Using the right terms to describe things is important. If you want wine, you don't order grape juice. Most likely it is a mobile 5 V power supply, which is somewhat more than a simple transformer.
Isn't USB 4.5 volts ? And USB might not supply enough current for the camera either. But it might be worth a shot; probably wouldn't hurt.
