The black tag on the driver's side door post gives only the month and year of manufacture. In my case it is 3/17. I bought the car on 30 March. It was delivered to Portland, OR and trucked up to the Seattle area. So if you are on the West Coast, it can take less than 30 days from the time the car is built to when it is at your dealer.

First, I'll be heading to north-central North Carolina... to meet up with an old High School (Class of - GASP! - '73!) buddy of mine where he lives. And then, I'll be following him in my car as he drives his 16' (?) camper to north-west South Carolina (near Anderson, SC... close to the Georgia border) to view the total solar eclipse on the 21st. Paul (my buddy) has been into astronomy AND "astral photography" (I think that's the proper term) since we first knew each other as sophomores.

Da-a-a-a-ng, though: I sure hope the eclipse doesn't take place at night... we'd BOTH hate to miss it!

COOL, #1: Upon looking at a map to refresh my memory, the campsite is about 15 miles west of Anderson... only 3 or 4 turns / only 3 or 4 miles off of I-85's Exit 4. We're planning to be there from the afternoon (maybe 5:00-ish pm) of the 18th until the morning (maybe 10:00-ish am) of the 22nd. Maybe you could stop by? 'Twould be really neat if you could... especially if I have my Prime by then!

PS: I tried to add an image / map here, but I guess I'm not "allowed" to do so... :( ........

We special ordered our Prius Prime and the dealer kept us informed along the way. Our car was built on March 23 and was on the Viking Destiny vehicle carrier ship on or around March 29. I tracked the ship on the Marine Traffic app. After going through the Panama Canal, it arrived at the Jacksonville, FL port on April 24. It took a week of Southeast Toyota Distributors processing and ground transportation for the Prime to arrive at our NC dealer on May 1. We took delivery on May 2, 40 days after the build date.

The dealer had real good info. The car arrives on 30th June! They'll process it, prep it and call me. I would have picked it up on my next day off (Tues.,) but that's 4th of July. So I'll pick it up for real on my only other day off thursday the 6th of July. I had planned a purposeful delay in case Toyota has some cash back deals in store for July for Illinois (hint: they won't). I want to inspect it first in a day or two, test drive it, etc., and then next thursday I will trundle my way slowly through the various stations of pain (finance and extended warranty people) before they kick me out of there with my new toy. I don't expect them to have charged it up or to know anything about the car. Thank the Lord and Danny for PC, or I'd be without any info. Photos and stories as they happen.

I would expect that they will have charged it up for you. My dealer also knew nothing about the Prime - they had received it from a dealer in Oregon. The charging cable was in the car still wrapped in plastic. But the car was charged. I expect it is one of the items on the checkoff sheet they use when delivering the car to the buyer. I am assuming that they would be familiar with charging if they sold the older model PIPs.

Dealership "familiarity" or not... I believe that if I were fortunate enough to be in your shoes, I'd be calling them, and asking if they had made plans to charge it. If NOT familiar, I'd tell them "how" to do it. (Anybody who can charge a cell phone from a wall outlet should be able to figure it out, for goodness' sake!) IF familiar, I'd tell them it WILL be fully charged (AND have a full tank of gas) PRIOR TO my "scheduled" date / time for arriving at the dealership for the purpose of taking delivery!

I appreciate your suggestions about asking/instructing the dealer to charge it up. I get that. It is what they should do. I don't have a big problem if they don't do it. I'd rather them not be fiddling with the menus and trying to charge it and failing. I'll have my own moments of fiddling with the menus and trying and failing the first time to charge it myself when I get home. I'd rather accomplish that step on my own - only way to learn. If I was buying a Leaf or any Tesla, well, then yes. I'm itching to fire up my L2 charger as soon as possible anyway.

The important things for me is that they remember to not install the wheel covers and possibly scratch the painted alloy wheels, killing the multi-beep backup, and installing the black shifter plate, all N/C. If they do those, and turn the SiriusXM on and help me with the Safety Connect, I'll be happy. The car is in, actually. I just have to find time away from work to look at it and pick it up. Thursday is the day.

David, there are no menus to fiddle with. It is no more complicated than charging your laptop or your electric toothbrush. You press on the metal cover on the rear of the car and it opens. There is a rubber cover over the socket. Remove the cover and insert it in its holder, then insert the blue plug that comes with your car. A small green light comes on to show that it is charging. When the charge is complete that light goes out. If you open a door or the hatch anytime while you are charging, a readout on the dash will tell you how many hours and minutes it will take to finish the charge. When finished, press the release button on the blue plug, pull it out, replace the rubber cover and close the metal cover. You are done.
