I just looked more closely at @eric1234's picture. It looks like on yours, the latch and the switch are the same thing. Interesting. The PiP has a separate switch to tell the car the door is open or closed. Pretty crowded! I agree with you. That could and should have been done better.

I actually take that seriously. A good design is one that inherently prevents screw ups. Like with a traditional key ignition: where you can't remove the key until the engine is off and the car in park. A design that relies on the unflagging attention of the driver, warning bells and screen messages: not so good.

I was being a little facetious. Actually, I agree. The hardest (and one of the most important) parts of design is anticipating the creative ways users can screw up. You can't anticipate everything, but you try and you upgrade once someone finds the chink in your armor. I used to spend hours on the production floor looking for things that might go wrong so I could head them off before they happened. And I also spent some time installing "dumb guy photo eyes" in a can palletizer discharge because some idiot went in there while it was running without hitting the E-Stop at the entrance and it discharged a partly full pallet. Broke the guy's hip, crunched some organs, and almost killed him. In spite of having it hammered into his head that you never ever reach into or enter a machine without proper lock-out tag-out procedures. Even the smartest of us has an occasional brain fart. As I said, any mistake you survive should be a learning experience. ;)

I had an issue fueling up a couple of tanks ago. Seemed like it was full, but I had only put in2 gallons. I must have hit the latch and didn't realize I just needed to hit the fuel door button again! I ended up closing the fuel door, and driving to another pump thinking it was an issue with the pump. Ahhh...another mystery solved :)

I sent my suggestions about manual, display, and sticker revisions to Toyota and just got this in email:

    Dear David,

First of all, thank you for being a Toyota customer! We hope you are enjoying your new vehicle.

We would like to invite you to the Toyota Owners' Intersection - a community of select Toyota owners who are directly involved in the ongoing evaluation and development of Toyota products and services. The goal of this community is to make the ownership experience even better for all Toyota owners.

We are very interested in your participation and hope you will join us. Simply click on the link below to complete a short profiling questionnaire. After that, you will be invited to participate in discussions, in-person events, and other surveys on various topics related to Toyota.

Well I guess as long as you don't mind being profiled ;)

But as much as I am usually cynical about surveys, since I suspect most of them are just used for marketing, this one sounds like could be worthwhile, and might be interesting to participate in.

I did, too. Must be a mass email campaign of registered owners.
