HV vs. EV Mode Cost

    Well, the other variable is how much electricity your pulling from the wall. My average from a fully drained battery is 6.55 kWh though I have pulled more, which I assume is when I've delved into the HV portion of the battery which then can be as high as 6.78 kWh.

    Edit: also what about those guys getting 30+ In EV range! right now I'm just about 25, so your chart gives me a good idea.... I actually use @Lee Jay 's chart when I'm discussing the advantages of the Prime to people.

    The irony is I knew about the hidden torque with our 2003 Prius. It would scoot across the intersection pretty well shutting down everyone else. It did run out of pull quickly and even our 2010 Prius, barely doubled it to ~30 m. Even now, our Prius Prime is short distance sprinter but the BMW i3-REx ... OH BOY!

    This corresponds nicely to the back-of-the-envelope estimate that a full charge is equivalent to 1/2 gallon of gasoline.

    I am amused at how many are willing to go EV '1/2 gallon' increments but recoil in horror at the 2 gallon, 80 mile range of our BMW i3-REx.

    Ok. I have PSEG and I'm averaging .04972 for distribution and .12909 for supply, which gives me .17881 per kWh.

    I just divide total bill charge by total kWh. They don't make it easy to figure your bill. 145.50/997=0.14593. It varies a little monthly but averages out to 0.148 this year.

    I just recalculated our electricity. Total bill (taxes and all) divided by total kWh is a whisker over 12 cents per kWh. Gas just dropped to $2.059 at most stations near us. Cheap as gas is, electric still wins. Especially when I can get so much at no cost.

    We joined the 40 mile EV club last week so I agree with the sentiment that the EPA numbers being used in the calc may overestimate break even for some.

    Somewhat related, being a new Prius owner I have noticed when I try to calc my MPGs per tank by using the trip odometer and the EV driving ratio percent i noticed that EV driving ratio percent includes miles in HV mode with gas engine off. Unless I'm off base here on two tanks (all highway) I'm seeing 43 MPG and about 20% of my EV ratio being HV EV if that makes any sense. I know I should not use 43 in the calc, just an interesting tidbit.

    Yes, the %EV does include HV elec. But you can use that to see true gas mpg's. And congrats on your new Prime. (y)

    Awesome! I hope to get mine that high. I figure your break-even would be $/gal = 8.37 x $/kwh. You're in great shape! With EV range like that, EV mode makes economic sense even in Hawaii.

    Yup, easily adjustable! ($ per kwh) * (kwh of full charge) / (miles traveled on full EV charge) = ($ per gallon) / (mpg in HV mode) is the method that I used, so you can easily tweak any of those variables to suit your circumstances. Assuming EV range of 25 and 54 MPG, your break-even is $/gal = 14.148 x $/kwh. :)
