Featured Toyota diesel+hybrid not happening

    A Toyota Motor executive this week ruled out the possibility of rolling out hybrid models powered by diesel engines in the near future.

    “Diesel engine is much more expensive than gasoline. The hybrid system which requires sophisticated technology is also costly,” Shizuo Abe, executive general manger at Toyota, told reporters at a forum in Seoul, according to The Korea Herald.

    “When combining the two systems together, the price has to go up. Therefore, it will take some time before finding the right solution to cut costs to meet customer demand,” he said.

    For more than two decades, Toyota has invested in hybrid vehicles that merge the use of internal combustion engines and electric motors. Toyota now offers 40 models with hybrid powertrains and the new 2018 Toyota Camry, one of the company’s most important vehicles, is being introduced with a hybrid option right alongside two gasoline engines when it launches this summer.

    The irony is early reports are the next hybrid Camry uses gasoline direct injection which if done badly could lead to diesel-like, particulates.

    All the engines in the new Camry use both port and direct injection. Presumably to reduce the particulate emissions, but it will mean increased engine cost.

    Huh? Both port and direct injection in the same engine or did they differentiate based upon engine core?

    Actually both on the same engine. Toyota had it on an old Lexus engine, and other manufacturers are looking into it. Under operating conditions that would lead to more particulates being formed, the engine uses the ports instead of direct injection. The EU, and maybe the US, is going to start enforcing particulate limits on gassers soon, and the manufacturers are looking into ways of keeping them low on DI engines to avoid the use of an exhaust filter.

    I think as far back as the IS-F or early in this generation of GS that Toyota used port and direct injection in the same engine - port for every use and direct for high power situations.
