I was carrying a large item yesterday and driving with the hatch open. I expected it to alert me to that in much the same way the seat belt alarm would have...but no. It just keeps beeping (it does however, stop while stopped). Is there a user defined "thing" to turn off the door ajar beep or at least make it a short series? I'm not really interested in pulling the fuse each time, but I don't drive this way often either. Thanks.

Someone needs to make an adjustable strap that can be locked into the tailgate latch and the other end hooks onto the hoop the latch normally engages. This can be used to carry large items with the hatch open. The strap could be marketed to most car owners as most have the same catch system. Having the catch in the latched position will (I think) keep the warning from beeping.

We can market it under the CO (carbon monoxide) brand name. It should be blue.

Good one Tom. Do note that once the cat system is warm, no CO comes out of the exhaust pipe. The cat. converts it to CO2. ;)

But it's a valid thing to take steps to avoid.

It shouldn't bother you once you fall asleep.

Great idea.....and it already exists and I own one. Although, I can't find a link for it at the moment. I haven't tested it with a Prius and I don't know if it will stop the beeping, but it does work exactly as you explained it.

Quick hack/fix to silence hatch beep in Gen 3 (2015)

I had to transport a door for a friend and the incessant beeping drove me crazy. I search but couldn't find a fix.

Some said there was a button you had to press, but couldn't find one. I studied the hatch hook, it's a simple U shaped piece of metal. First i bent a long screw in the shape, stuck it in the latch hatch, and the light went out went out in the hatch area. Note, you have to press it all the way in, and it LOCKS in place. You have to press the hatch release button, and it will release it, actually it shot it out. I wasn't sure where to store this bent screw, so I went looking for hooks. and I found a hook with an eye on the other end of it. Now, I have it secured to the tie down in at the back of the prius with a piece of rope. The rope is just long enough to put it in the hatch latch.

No more beeping. You can probably find one similar at local hardware store.

Yeah, mimic the shape of the hatch hook and you're in business. I've never yet needed to do this, but I tested with a carabiner of roughly the same dimensions, works great. Also gives you something to tie cord, to hold down the hatch. Short pieces of the plumbing pipe foam insulation are handy too, the kind with longitudinal slits. Push the tubing onto the lower hatch edge, to protect it.

I found a carabiner I had..but it's a bit thick. The other hooks are literally shot out, but my carabiner has to be pulled out of the latch.

Look for a carabiner roughly the same size as hatch tang:

In place. You can hear the locking mechanism engage on it. As far as the car is concerned, the hatch is closed, there'll be no beep, and courtesy lights go out. To release the carabiner, press hatch release and pull up:

Plumbing pipe insulation, to protect hatch edge, from whatever you've got loaded:
