Filter wont come off...Ideas?

    Oy vey, that requires a tow. Get a new housing, then get serious with it?

    Why would that require a tow? I can just add oil back to the car, put back on the cover and take it over.

    Can't you just put in new oil and ask them to only replace the filter and half a quart or whatever's in the housing?

    I sure hope so....it is counter clockwise when looking straight onto the black portion of the filter canister.

    The previous owner claimed to do them actually...he even gave me two oil filters since I am a DIY guy too. I messaged him asking if he might have any ideas how to get it off since he has been doing them himself...maybe he took it to a shop before he sold it for the last one...who knows.

    Update* I scheduled a oil change at the dealership for thursday and I hope to bring in my own filter and housing in hopes they will just do those at a cheaper cost.

    When I did my first oil change (purchased car new) it was tight as hell. I had the correct tool and still broke a tooth. Since then, it has been a breeze to unscrew.

    I GOT IT OFF!!!! Other peoples difficulties gave me the motivation to get it done on my own and save 80$. I had it on ramps and added extra wheel chocks and backup everything and got under and went even more for it...that took a lot. There is only one plastic notch left on the canister so I am going to replace it and put it back on pretty lightly...Maybe I will just buy amsoil oil filters so I dont have to change it very often :p

    I'm gonna plead the 5th, or something, regarding my "tow" comment. And yeah: if the filter is ever removed: you only lose a few ounces.

    what is this clip that some people are talking about for the filter? I've not seen or heard about this one time

    No idea of the purpose of the clip but I removed it...didnt help take it off and I might put it back on...we will see

    The clip does nothing, and doesn't appear to impede removal or install of the filter housing in the least. It's noted in the Repair Manual. I suspect it's main function is to appease some lawyer or engineer with a concern about the housing coming loose.

    As long as you do your own future oil changes you will be fine. (y)

    I've never done anything with the clip on mine. IIRC, the manual comes right out and says not to do anything with it, and as it's not in the way at all, I never have.

    My filter cap was really hard to loosen the first time, but it's much easier now that the last person to tighten it was me.

    think Ill stick with the gen 2's...everything I see on the gen 3's posted here is showing me the quality went down hill after 2010 from motors blowing up at 110,000 miles to them burning a qt of oil in 600 miles to cheap filter housings you cant get off without an impact gun.... nope Im keep my 08 till she dies

    Those with or thinking of converting to "spin on" filters, don't be smug. They can also be overtightened and become very difficult to remove. In fact, the GII filter, because it is -up- inside "stuff", can be very difficult to remove if you don't have a filter socket to put on the end of it (for the years I did the oil changes on Pearl I used a "band type" filter tool - but I never overtightened it and could usually remove it by hand and only occasionally had to use the band type tool). The reason Toyota went to the cartridge type is they are easy to dispose of. Did you know if you burn one you are left with nothing but ash? No metal etc.

    To the OP, congratulations. That will probably be the hardest thing you will ever have to do to the car. Now just install the new housing without tightening it much, just turn till it bottoms. As I posted before, I like to use grease on the "o" ring, but at the very least, oil it nicely before turning in the housing.

    I just did an oil change on Pearl S and it was very easy, using the socket type tool on the housing. I do the filter first, as the OP did, then when the new filter is installed do the oil. While the oil is draining I get to inspect the CV boots, look around under the car for damage etc. I was rather surprised to find dried leaves from last fall on top of the filter access door. I can't imagine how they got in there. The car is always parked in the garage. I guess it's true, "stuff happens". ;)
