The book "The Spaceships of Ezekiel" also dealt with that subject in great detail. I believe it was written by an ex NASA engineer who was initially highly sceptical about the whole concept.

Fascinating reading from my childhood, that completely reshaped the way I viewed the entire universe around me.

    You may enjoy reading:

Detecting Life In Space: The Red Edge : 13.7: Cosmos And Culture : NPR

It links to (what I regard as) an historic paper by Carl Sagan et al. from 1993. More than just a popular communicator of science as you will see (free download).

Also links to a 2005 paper continuing a consideration of how plants (here) reflect light in peculiar way. This being the red edge. How strong their case is for universality I do not yet know. Takes a bit of effort to crowbar things from Liebert Publishers

Topic has led me to estimate how much chlorophyll there is on earth. May bore readers with that later.

Also, what fraction of the surface is covered with this stuff? And how low a fraction could we detect?

For land plants, chlorophyll concentration range in leaves is known. Land area with plants and average leaf area index come next.

Oceans are tricky because global maps are colorful, but actual data is 'be Or depth of hind the screen'. Also they are expressed as milligrams per cubic meter, so we need to know depth of (occupied) euphotic zone.

Still in work but I can say that chlorophyll nitrogen (thing I care about) is much less than that in earth's most abundant protein. Which in somebody's humorous retirement seminar got the name of RuBisCo. So it would have been better if someone else here had asked :)

Even if there are many different life chemistries, we would have hopes that the number of living planets greatly exceeds the number of possible chemistries. That would give hopes of plentiful samples of each. So even if this sort of red edge marks only a low fraction of the possible types, a search for it could still be useful.

As an example of such a probabilistic search, the Kepler search for exoplanets depends on stellar transits. It can detect only the small fraction that orbit in a plane nearly edge-on to us, depending on star diameter and the planet's distance from the star. For a system exactly like our own, with a random orbital tilt, a Kepler-like search would have about a 1% chance of detecting Mercury, 0.5% chance of detecting Earth, and 0.1% chance of detecting Jupiter. Yet, even with these low individual chances, there are so vastly many examples out there that it has picked up thousands of confirmed exoplanets. Do note that the finds are heavily weighted towards close-in orbits, which is expected from the bias built in to the search method.

Going by what I've seen in aquariums through the years, pigments besides chlorophyll are more likely to be used for photosynthesis in the aquatic environment than on land.

    Look into ancient astronaut theory.

My wife watches shows where it is brought up, and I try to keep my mouth shut.

    Awwwww crap....

If you don't have a membership to the romper-room (FHOP_P) then we'd probably be better off leaving Chapter and Verse be for a while. There's a lot of good conversation here about folks (and non-folks) from other places and I think that it would be ashamed to deprive adults of the topic.

    Me?

I'm not offended by much.....but there are others for whom things that begin with "G" is cause to reach for their binkies and blankies.....

We see enough of that on TV.

Personally, I believe this predominantly blue terrestrial ball is being continually visited by beings from several "realms".

We'll leave the exact locations (or IDs) of those realms for another topic. The jury is out on whether they're from alternate dimensions, other galaxies, an alternate reality, space time continuum, or even this very world but paradoxically out of phase with our own "here and now"......but, I digress.

"They".....whoever they are (and I'd lay odds on there being multiple "extraterrestrial" races) are definitely STILL visiting us, and for all we know, may be living amongst us in some unassuming form - more than likely those that could easily pass for humans with minimal surgery or no need for that at all. We humans are diverse enough as it is. Example: nobody ever looked at a.....oooh let's see? Okay......an American of African descent and thought....."He's an extraterrestrial....". I could be wrong, but you get the general idea of what I'm getting at.

What is certain is that credible reports continue to come in every so often, despite attempts by certain powers (no, I don't have a tin foil hat) to hide or otherwise debunk the truth.

Let's jump back to the 11th of July 2004. Wembley, London UK. It was just after 1.30am in the morning, I'd been watching a late movie alone on TV, as it was the weekend.
The movie ended, I went to the kitchen to grab something to drink......orange juice from the fridge; and no, I don't drink alcohol. Ever. So I wasn't drunk.

The kitchen was in darkness, and I decided not to turn the lights on, so I could look outside the windows and stare at the sky.

I poured my orange juice into a cup, using the light inside the fridge to see what I was doing, then closed the fridge, turned around to stare at the window as I sipped my juice.....and froze.

Some away distance in the sky, far from my location but below cloud cover, I saw, first one, then several other softly glowing undefined white balls of light drifting across my line of vision. Though they seemed to be moving slowly, due to the distance from where I was, they were actually moving at a pretty fast clip.

There were about between 11 to 16 softly glowing pearlescent balls of light (orbs?) crossing the sky in perfect formation. They were NOT birds migrating. They were not Chinese hot air lanterns. They were not jigging up and down like birds flapping their wings either.

I watched the drift across the view of the window soundlessly, watching as they appeared from out of my field of vision. Initially, I thought it was an aircraft just taken off from Heathrow, till more and more lights appeared, in no particular pattern - there was just an oval cluster of them.

I stared in total disbelief at the aerial spectacle unfolding before my eyes - then I spotted something that made my blood run stone cold, and struck a rather morbid fear into me.

    I'll try and explain;

In the midst of THAT cluster of floating orbs purposefully moving from East to West across my line of vision, was a lone solitary orb that was not doing what the rest of them were.

Y'see, this one was moving on a perpendicular plane to the rest of the cluster, such that, it skilfully maintained its location just about the middle of the cluster, but it was moving back and forth across breadth of the cluster with the unmistakable accuracy of a sky borne metronome. It was terrifyingly creepy to observe.

As the whole cluster of unidentifiable orbs moved across the sky in one direction, all of them holding their exact spot unwaveringly in the group, that lone orb tacked back and forth within the width of the cluster, perpendicular to their direction of travel, bouncing from one side of the cluster to the other and back in a precise manner that told me I was looking at (the product of?) an extraterrestrial sentience of some sort. I'm not entirely sure why it was doing that. I'm sure it had a reason. I was reminded of the operation of a radar system sweeping back and forth, monitoring, scanning back and forth. Was performing a similar function? Or were it's actions related to something else I cannot even possibly comprehend?

I watched aghast, as the whole smoothly, albeit unhurriedly, flew out of my line of vision and continued due west. Then the fear set in.

I had just witnessed something I was sure wasn't from this planet. A phenomenon I could barely comprehend or understand. BUT I SAW IT. And it was THAT orb bouncing back and forth across the breadth of its clustered brethren in perfect mathematical harmony that scared the living daylights out of me. There was nothing "natural" about those movements. It was like they were programmed! This was the work of sentience.

I confess I scurried straight off to bed scared out of my wits. As far as I was concerned, I'd just had another unexpected visual encounter with something NOT of this world.

A few years later, it occurred to me that I could have been staring at actual extraterrestrials. What if those glowing orbs were sentient energy beings? Maybe one of them was on sentry duty? Who knows? Just a thought.

It wasn't the first experience and it wasn't the last. I have no doubt that we're not alone. Even discounting "Top Secret Black Technologies", there are things I confess to have seen that defy logical earthly explanation. Many at a personal level . I didn't ask for this either.

Oh, and my sighting wasn't my imagination playing tricks on me. That orb cluster had been seen hours earlier over Portugal, and a few hours after I saw them, made an appearance over South America!

I'd wager that we're not alone. We were never alone. Who are they and where do they really come from? I do not know. I'm just another "shmuck" occasionally looking for answers, but trying hard to be sceptical too....(the sceptical bit of me always gets another puzzle lobbed in, to destroy my scepticism....oh the irony ).

What I do know, is that I'm not gonna close my eyes and pretend what I saw didn't happen - we are more than likely not alone. I say that from personal experience, and no, I'm not telling lies!

Back in 1984 / 1985.....I was a scholarship foreign student of Architecture in Minsk, Belorus.

Towards the summer, daylight would start as early as about 3.30am in the morning, or even earlier in June!

Anyway, early in the morning, as dawn was breaking during the summer months (between 3.00am and 4.00am approximately), I would wake up to a rather bizarre situation - I would become aware that there was an orange ball of light floating just above the TV in my room - engaged in a lively conversation with me. Yes, we were having a rather engaging chat. The funny thing is, as I began to wake up, I could see it hovering over the TV, it's orange glow fluctuating as it spoke. And often, I could hear myself talking back - like it was a questions and answer session! I would often be half awake when this was going on - aware, yet in that twilight state when you're not fully awake or fully asleep. The minute I attained full awareness of all my faculties and wanted to know what on Earth I was talking about, with (of all things) a self-levitating glowing ball of light in my bedroom (?!! )......the conversation would stop dead! The orange orb would either float straight up through the ceiling and disappear.....or simply float straight out the CLOSED window and disappear. This decidedly paranormal spectacle repeated itself several times, and continued even when I changed rooms to another part of the student hostel building!

I could never remember what the chat was about. What I was aware of, was that I (or at least my body) was willingly engaged in a very lively conversation with something apparently out of this world at a time when the rest of the hostel was fast asleep.

Fortunately, I was rather young at the time and didn't give it much of a thought. Suffice to say, I lived in a world devoid of science fiction at the time - this was after all Soviet Russia. No Star Trek, Star Wars or similarly out of this world TV series.......Nothing existed around me that could have fired my imagination to that level. In fact, it wasn't till 1996 back in the UK, that having been exposed to a lot of reading material about the extraterrestrial phenomena and the like, that I remembered those incidents in Minsk.....yes, I did get a shock realised it seems I'd been in contact with something NOT of this world.

For the curious, no, I wasn't being pranked, I lived alone in my room - behind a locked door! I didn't drink then and I don't drink now.
And no......I've never taken any recreational drugs or whacky backy either.

Pardon my sharing, but I thought I'd drop this bit into the thread.

Was that contact with Aliens.....or was my imagination running riot repeatedly? Don't answer that!

    The truth.....as they say.....is out there !

With all due respect, that's the most difficult part of your story for me to grasp.
How do you notice you are having early morning semi-conscious discussions with a spectral orange ball of light and not give it much thought?

Isn't that kind of like saying you shared Smores on a camping trip with Big Foot but never thought too much about it?

I changed my statement above from "believe" to "grasp".
I don't mean any disrespect. How do I know what may or may not of been happening?

My only question is, that if that was happening to me?
I think I would of been using every obtainable bit of mid 80's technology to try to capture what was happening, and I think I would of done everything I could to try to figure out what was going on.

It would of been pretty hard for me....Alien Contact, Spectral Visit, or Sleep Deprivation - to not give it much thought.
