kWh consumption

    All,

    I've just filled up our new Prius Prime advanced for the first time. Paper and pencil it averaged 106 miles per gallon. We are thrilled. However something is missing in the record, and that would be the total kWh consumed in driving those miles. I've been through the manual and there are many places to get average miles/kWh, but what I am looking for is a trip-meter like display documenting the kWh consumed between resets so I could calculate that in my total carbon footprint.

    Any clue about where to get this number would be appreciated.

    You have to calculate it yourself, as far as I can tell.

    Pretty easy - you have miles/kWh and miles driven every day. Just do the math.

    Thanks. My experience doing that with the dashboard reported miles per gallon is that the car is usually off by about 8 - 10% compared to paper and pencil (dividing the change in the odometer by the gallons I pump into the tank). I was hoping for raw kWh consumed, analogous to gallons pumped in) to do the calculation.

    You'll never have that from the car because the car doesn't measure that. For that, you'd need to measure the power coming into the charger. What the car measures is the power coming out of the battery, which is not the same thing.

    If you want that, you'll have to put a meter upstream of your charger or install a charger with a built-in meter, and only use that charger.

    It fits between the car J1772 and EVSE J1772.

    CAUTION: Our JuiceBox 40 Pro requires a WiFi network connection to the Internet. This can be a mobile hotspot which is what I'm using at Propst, 717 Pratt Ave, Huntsville AL (see Plugshare.com).

    Ah, I think I see your point - that there are inherent losses between the outlet and what actually can be stored by the battery and then used by the car. Unfortunately that would be a very awkward number to get, as I charge both at the lab and at home. So, simplifying a bit, the amount that the car measures coming out of the battery would be acceptable.

    Well, it would be nice if the car gave you that but it doesn't (as far as I can tell) so you'll have to calculate it yourself by dividing miles driven by miles/kWh.

    I notice it uses your WiFi network, what happens if you live on the 14 th floor of your apartment and the car is waaaay out there in the parking lot, nowhere near any WiFi?:eek:

    On the MFD you can see the miles driven per month and also average miles/kWh per month. Maybe those can help you get close.

    The best way is to have a meter on the electric output before the car, which I did for 3 years on my 2014 PIP and now on my 2017 Prius Prime. There are a few plug load meters, including the Kill-o-watt (about $20)
    . I use a slightly more advanced version that can record and download interval data. Typically, a PIP uses about 3 - 3.4 kWh per charge - less in winter and more in summer (cold limits charge). That gives you 10 (winter) -12 (summer) in my NYC climate. If you multiply the electric rate by 3 - 3.4 kWh, then divide by 10-12 you get cents/mile. For example, 3.2 kWh x 18 c/kwh / 12 miles = 4.8 c/mile. The gas comparison is similar, but you can base it on a tank ($20 fillup / 400 miles = 5 cts/mile)

    These usage reports is one of the reasons I went with the Chargepoint home charging station. Whether I charge at a public Chargepoint station or at home, it is all there in one place. The home charging station is treated just like any other Chargepoint station, except that it is visible only to me.

    Charles, do you feel the data is accurate? I've read some of the posts and they complain that "some" data is off. I'm assuming that's mileage prediction. Trying to decide with a Smart Charger like Chargepoint or A ClipperCreek, which I'd get with a higher Amperage to future proof myself.

    I just ignore the estimated EV miles on the Chargepoint report. It says "based on 2017 Prius Prime", which means that it is probably just computed from the EPA score. But I have no reason to doubt the usage numbers (instantaneous KW at any time during a charging session, and total KWH). After all, on the public stations these readings can be used to bill real money, so they had better be accurate.

    I went ahead and got the 32 amp (6KW) version, mainly because it came with a longer cord, but also for "future proofing".

    That would be awfully useless for me, since I charge at work (not ChargePoint), and at mine and other's houses using my provided L1 charger, and have never seen a ChargePoint charger anywhere.

    I do it with a spreadsheet.
