My HUD in my 2017 Prius IV shut itself off at some point while driving home from my sister's house. I noticed when my navigation was on the display right below the windshield. (I just like using the navigation sometimes.). When I look back up at the HUD where I normally see turn directions and my speed I noticed it was not on. I tried to go into settings to see what was up, but HUD was not a choosable option. It had been grayed out. Anyone have anything like this happen? I am going to go to the dealer, but if it is something easy that would be great.

Should be a button on the lower panel near your left knee marked HUD. It should cycle between off, speed and speedo with energy diagram, etc. Try that first, but this car needs the driver to read the manual because the Gen 4 Prius has lots of idiosyncracies. Sorry if that sounds mean but you will learn a lot from just looking through it all.

And remember, there's no test at the end! (y)

Thank you both. That did it. I forgot about that button.

They're a lot easier to search from the PDF computer file than finding information in the book. I've got the US & EURO ones here, but the Australian one I couldn't find - but they're close enough.

Not an issue with shutting off but was driving my wife's prius today to get its 5k service done and noticed the HUD looked very dim. I tried to turn the brightness up all the way up but i don't recall it being so dim. I mentioned it to the service advisor but since the prius was "inside" the service center it was dark so you can see the display. If you turn the brightness to 50% its almost as if it's off. Any ideas? Might make another appointment and have them compare it to another vehicle with HUD

Since the dealer did not even check it out my suggestion would be to find another dealer who cares about performing good service on a vehicle.
I do not have the HUD but I know if the speedometer brightness is adjusted all the way down that the night sensor is ignored and it is very dim. One position higher and it is ok.

I can't remember if it does this on the Gen 4 but on the Gen 3 if you adjusted the HUD brightness all the way up then held the button the brightness went up another notch.
The brightness(night) sensor for the other instruments also is ignored when you have them set to full brightness, it stays at full glare at night.

I have tried messing with the brightness---unfortunately its my wife's car so I'm not in there all that much. But when I was driving it yesterday I noticed the HUD was very dim---when I adjusted the brightness to 50% if was not even visible---I had to turn it up all the way to even see it. Also I adjusted the dash lights to 100% also and still didn't work. I think its a loose wire somewhere...

Did you have the headlights on? The HUD likely dims when the headlights are on.

You can also change the brightness of the HUD when the headlights are off. Use the rocker switch near your left knee and hit the UP arrow. The level of brightness shows up on the speedometer screen
