Source: Volkswagen CEO: 'Anything You [Tesla] Can Do, We Can Do Better'

Though Tesla is years ahead of VW’s plans for electrification, and the Silicon Valley automaker plans to be producing 500,000 cars a year by the end of next year, and perhaps one million by 2020, VW believes it will win. Volkswagen brand boss, Herbert Diess, said at a recent press conference: "Anything Tesla can do, we can surpass."

Unsaid,"Ve just chose not to anything."

I've noticed a lot of 'concept' cars including an electric microBus but no product.

VW is again "social", these days? I truly thought they were busy cleaning the air.

"Cleaning the air" or "clearing the air" gets translated to "venting on social media"?

I'm sure that is exactly what he is saying.
Me as well. I look forward to having more choices as a consumer. And Tesla can't move the world to sustainable transportation on its own, it needs help.

just because VW has proven they are dishonest doesn't mean they're liars for ever. In fact, i KNOW they'll help clean the air ... and it'll be quite easy. They simply remove their rolling coal / gross polluters. Mission accomplished !
    ;)
The article says anything Elon Musk can do, VW can do better. How do you know an auto manufacturer filled with cheaters are lying ? their lips are moving.

I'm sure the VW electric cars will work just fine.
But they might not allow students to drive them.

Just to be sure they don't think it is OK to cheat on tests.

That's cool VW, when can I buy your plug in cars? Oh, not for a few years? Guess I'm stuck driving that plain old Chevy Volt instead, and saving on gas today. And the Tesla Model 3 will likely be out a few years before them too.

I guess we should be happy they're even making plug-in cars though. Remember when they were all saying "nobody wants electric cars." a few years back? At least until Tesla started stealing their sales.

After what I've gone through with VW, if they dropped an EV on my front lawn and said it was free, I'd sell it at the first chance I got.

It isn't clear that the current CEO, Herbert Diess, is free from association with the diesel scandal and stock manipulation. There were some investigations in 2016 but nothing came of it, yet.

More recently: VW CEO Directly Drawn for First Time Into Diesel Scandal Probes - Bloomberg. This is about another VW associated CEO Matthias Mueller who may have been found to participate in the scheme or possibly withholding information that manipulated the stock.
