Hello everyone. I'm finally ready to start pulling the engine on my 2012 prius with 238000 miles. Some of you requested that I do a write up documenting the process. I'm not very good at things like that so I'll do my best. I'm in no hurry whatsoever and will be taking my sweet time with this job. I appreciate any advice/opinions/criticism anyone has to offer. I've done a few engine replacements in my day and I am by no means a professional. The prius is a whole new ball game for me.
I've already got the car up on ramps in the back and fully extended 6 ton jack stands in the front. The stands are 23 1/2" tall which gives me about 28" of clearance in the front to drag the engine out from under it. If need be I have some concrete pads to put under the stands if I need more clerence. I simply backed the car up onto the ramps and set the e-brake. then i wrapped an 8ft strap around the front cross member and lifted the car up with the front end loader on my tractor. Then I set the jack stands under the car. 1494117403606.jpg

The engine should come out the front rather than underneath. At least that is how I have seen it done anyway.

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

I agree. I believe the engine area is built for it to be lifted up and out. But hey, you may find a better way.

My concern would be the height required to remove the engine knowing it will require some fiddling to get it out.

The base of the stands supporting that weight then introduction of lateral forces may not end well.

You make a good point Raytheeagle. ACP380 should check on the proper procedure in removing engine. The rear end of car will become heavier, the front end lighter and some movement may occur with terrible results.

Put some solid timber cribbing under there, just aft of the engine bay?

Just noticing too: everything is sitting on lawn. Maybe lift again, and put some squares of plywood under the safety stands?

    upload_2017-5-6_20-0-16.png

Even the ramps in back could start to dig in.

Just noticed the above. This I would do regardless, just to stabilize the jack stands better.

And this: I've no clue if it's easier to take the engine out from above or below, but with a few responders commenting that from above is more the norm, would the front end loader have sufficient lift to lift the engine up and out from above? Sounds a lot safer too.

The more I think about it the freakier jackstands on lawn, or on concrete slabs on lawn, seems. Besides the obvious soft, compressible nature, you've also got so little control over the ground being planar.

And pulling the engine: you're very likely going to have oil, transaxle fluid and coolant coming out. If there's a missus acp380, you're gonna be in the doghouse when the lawn withers'n dies there, lol.

If you've got a decent concrete slab somewhere, clear a space and do it there if at all possible.

Here's a thread with a separate link that shows disassembly of the Prius and removal of the engine:

    Opening engine after knocking!!

Be safe and I hope this helps(y).

You may get more than you bargain for if you try to drop it out as you might not be able to separate the engine from the transmission.

Since it sounds like you have time, peruse the thread and see what you think before you dig in. It might save you time me and hassle.

    Keep us posted (y).

If the front end loader on the tractor can lift the entire front end of the car, I suspect that it can also lift the engine out of the engine compartment.

The last three paragraphs of my post #8 was actually freshly added this morning, assume moved by moderator. I was thinking to highlight it but edit is locked-out.

I appreciate the intent, but OTOH someone who's already read through the thread is likely to miss the addition.

I agree with Mendel, Jack stands on grass is a really bad idea. And whatever you roll under the car to pull the engine can sink into the lawn as well. You might have a real problem on your hands.

It's not really on a lawn. It's very solid ground with caliche (rock) not far underneath. I do plan on adding the concrete blocks.
It's funny because most of the research I've done on this site said to pull the engine from the bottom along with the transmission. Some said it could be done from the top but it's such a pain in the butt to separate from tranny in the engine compartment that it's easier to just drop out the bottom. My brother is a body man and he said most newer cars are designed for the engine and tranny to come out still attached to the cradle.usually done on a lift but can be done the way I have it setup. They do this for efficiency on the assembly line. He said you don't even need to remove the wheels. Drop the cradle and roll the whole assembly out from under the car. Once it's out you have all the room in the world to separate the engine from the transmission. Also I plan to replace the struts at this point as well since they will also be attached to the cradle.
With all that said I haven't started anything yet other than panels underneath. And wiper cowl and airbox. Still exploring options.my brother recommend I buy a service manual.anyone have any experience with any one in particular?tomorrow I'll see if I can link up the threads that I found about pulling from the bottom.I think to pull from the top the radiator and front bumper would have to come off since the windshield protrudes so far into the engine compartment.
As for more blocking under the car I have plenty of stuff around and will definitely use it.
The image I posted is the cradle. Just imagine the engine and tranny sitting on there.
Unbolt the struts from the top. Disconnect exhaust. Disconnect speed sensors at the wheels. disconnect brake lines. Steering shaft will slip apart when the assembly is lowered . Wiring harness will disconnect at fuse box and come out still on engine. Ac compressor should Unbolt off the engine and hang out of the way with out having to disconnect lines. Rig to front loader via 2 lifting hooks bolted to engine. Unbolt the handful of bolts holding the cradle up. Then finally(maybe) Unbolt the 2 top motor mounts on each side then lower the whole thing to the ground with the front loader.. if it was being done on a lift it would already be on the ground and then you would lift the car off of the cradle. I may have missed a couple things( judging by the pic it looks like the upper control arms need to be disconnected from the body as well...although that particular cradle isn't from a prius) but that's how I have it played out in my head.
Like I said before I'm open to suggestions and not in a rush so that I can think this through.

this is a huge issue with the edit button, and also, when the mods consolidate consecutive posts.

    Looks like a fun project!

I'm interested in seeing if you can actually drop that whole cradle assembly in one piece. I've been wondering this for the last few months ever since I saw those two guys body swapping onto Prius chassis (the Dodge pickup and the Firebird). I always saw pics online of just the drivetrain sitting by itself without a chassis (Like here on display at an auto show: [IMG]) so figured it was possible do to.....and then basically all I'd have to do is figure out how to securely mount that assembly off the frame of a body-on-frame vehicle and mount the rest in back...like say an old classic Hilux that's sitting in my driveway :)

    Good luck!!!

You were up awful late last night:eek:....

Hope the OP didn't have a safety incident undertaking the job (as he hasn't been on in several weeks). Hopefully our warnings were heeded prior to the job beginning.

I work around chemicals that demand respect, so I put safety very high on the list. I hope our advice and mentioning how @danlatu went about it got to @acp380 in time.

The Firebrid (Firebird hybrid) uses the complete Prius v chassis, not just the front end. The Firebird body and bumpers are placed on the Prius v chassis. This is being done by a mechanical engineer who is experienced in dealing with mechanical puzzles.
