50k, original tranny fluid though. if i can get 12k, and a prime plus for 18, that would be a pretty sweet deal.
but i still have to overcome the battery issue.

I've got 95k on my 12 also well maintained. Have to keep it longer to avoid losing money though.

i paid 30k - 12k = cost of 18k over 5 years and 50k miles. at what point do you consider a car 'not losing money'?

I would lose money by trading it in since that happened when I traded for this one. So I need to keep it at least until it's paid off, if not longer

Yes, I bought a new III in '11, traded for the PiP in '12 and refi'd in '14

gotcha, but does that mean you would actually lose money on a trade for prime? you might actually make out, what with all the discounts, rebates and tax credits involved.

Yes, I would, for several reasons. One, all the mods that I've done that aren't easily reversible, or that would be taken off the car and sold for less than I paid for them. Two, I owe more than my car is worth, so short of an optimistic trade-in value, I will lose money there as well. Three, any new car purchase is instant depreciation. Four, while not a "loss of money", I would be making payments for 6 more years, instead of 3 for my current setup.

If you're talking about trading the PiP for a slightly used Prime, then the rebates don't apply, but neither does the depreciation. I have not looked at the actual numbers, lest I be tempted :p

Every purchaser of a car loses money. A car is an expense. Just like food, beer and health insurance. The Prius, in my opinion, reduces my expenses. Not only in improved mileage over other options, but also in lost time and hassle.

I agree. But at the same time, the increased electric miles (and thus cost of fuel savings) of the Prime would be outweighed by the fact of the new car depreciation. The incentives of the Prime bring it down to the price of the regular Prius, but no more than that.

I thought I'd noticed something like that. I'm not really shopping, but do like to keep an eye on your web site every few weeks, Todd.

Todd doesn't sell new cars (yet, anyway), but I'm calling dibs right now on his first Prime. If I can come up with the money. LOL!! :D Hopefully, Mildred's '07 can last that long.

i would have been thrilled to get the pip for the price of a regular prius, as some did, who waited for the initial burst of sales to fade.

I meant he could probably sell his PiP to Todd for more than he would get on trade-in from a dealer.

So would I have, instead of paying 38k for a 32k car due to the negative equity. I got 1k state incentive and nothing from the fed since I was ineligible due to not making enough money that tax year.

Sounds like you're not going to be fooled twice, Bisco. (y)

I bought my PiP in October 2012 after a significant price drop. Let's see what October 2017 brings for the Prime. I can also attest that 2013 saw another significant drop but I didn't feel bad about it because I had to get another car as my Civic was going to my FIL.

I noticed the same. Other ways to tell the difference of a base vs. advanced on the '12 and 13's is that the advanced have round fog lights in the lower grill, headlight washers (somewhat oval plastic covers below the headlights), slightly larger screen with more buttons on each side.

Not to mention the LED headlamps (two eyeball projectors on each side instead of one), radar cruise button on the steering wheel, or leather seats (pleather?).

Right, the dealer I got it from was calling it leather. I believe it is genuine naugahyde.

No, it does not come with an iPhone.
