hopefully, the gen 4 12v is the same spec as one or more of their gassers. i.e. readily available almost anywhere, at a reasonable price.

For now, replacement should be a warranty issue unless it was abused or the car is over 36K miles.

How was that established? Based on a service writer posting in a forum, in a statement starting with "I can tell you..."? (n)

I suspect 12 volt batteries are "consumables", like brake pads. For good reason: they're way too easy to abuse.

It is also not excluded in the standard warranty as a consumable.

I agree, and I too am curious about why the original poster would like to install a new battery, especially one with specifications different from those chosen by Toyota’s design engineers.
Toyota Warranty Policy & Procedures (on techinfo.toyota.com), Policy 4.10 (07/15), “Original Equipment Battery Warranty Coverage,” states in part, “Original equipment (OE) 12V batteries, including those used in Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHV) and Electric Vehicles (EV), are warranted for 36 months or 36,000 miles from the vehicle’s in-service date, whichever occurs first.” The exclusions in the New Vehicle Limited Warranty apply, and there is also no coverage for “opened, dropped, frozen, or otherwise damaged” batteries.

The policy also requires the dealer to use a battery tester: “To qualify for warranty replacement, OE 12V batteries must be tested and failed using either the Digital Battery System Analyzer* (P/N 00002-V8150) or Battery Diagnostic Station* (P/N 00002-MCGR8 & 00002-MCGR8-P). When the tester indicates a ‘Replace Battery’ or a ‘Bad Cell – Replace’ test result, a 14 digit warranty code will be displayed when testing by CCA or JIS.”

There is a separate Policy 4.11 (01/16), “Service Part Battery Warranty Coverage,” for replacement batteries.
