Who knows how car dealers deal with inventory. I purchased my 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander from a Mazda dealer. Carfax says that it was used as a rental/loaner vehicle by the Mitsubishi dealer 10 miles away. It was purchased by the Mazda dealer at auction. Perhaps Mitsubishi didn't want to lose a new 2017 Outlander sale on the same lot to this badly depreciated 2016 model? And with 27,000 miles in a year, it was very badly depreciated. Ditto to Nissan with too many used Leafs on the lot? o_O

That's a good point, what do dealers do to remove any previous model years? I know the dealer next to me struggles with that.

They still have 5 brand new 2015 Gen3 Prii still on their lot.

Sometimes they try to ship it to another dealer that can more readily sell it (usually in an exchange).

You guys are going to hate me. I was Prius shopping two summers ago online and stumbled upon the PIP. I didn't even know they existed. I found one "used" with a little over 100 miles on it for $22,000. Pretty positive it had been purchased as a Christmas present and returned shortly after. The satellite radio subscription had been activated December 26th. I traded my BMW which I was upside-down in. Can't wait to pay this baby off. I just hit 75,000 miles too.

Man!! That would really be something to be given a PiP as a present. But then to say, "Nah, I don't want it?" Even more amazing. Congrats on the once-in-a-lifetime find.

I'd hate you if you weren't upside down on the Beemer. You got some and lost some. I'm glad you stayed the course in the transition from ultimate driving machine to ultimate boring machine.

I had it a year and was only paying $250 a month. Put 30,000 miles on it and drove the hell out of it. It was a fun car but cost me a rediculous amount of extra time and money. You live and learn.

I still qualified for the tax credit since it was never registered too. Basically got the best of both worlds with new and used.

The opposite of nearly everything said is closer to the truth. Dealers are horrible at maintaining the 12v battery. They have a big jumper battery pack on wheels just for starting all the vehicles that have been neglected and had their 12v battery die. The worst 12v batteries are the originals, because if the car starts, then dealers don't replace it, even if it's degraded.

It's the HV battery that can be neglected by the dealers. The HV battery isn't drained by leaving car doors open, or any of the other electronics because it is physically disconnected from everything when the car is not on and "ready". The drain from sitting is very minor.

Even though the 12v battery is way cheaper, it's the one to be concerned about. The maintenance of vehicles on the lot is the bare minimum required to convince a buyer to purchase.

As to the OP, every new vehicle purchase is an instant upside-down proposition. The vehicle will never be worth more than you paid for it (unless it turns classic decades later). Sue yourself for not understanding vehicle purchases aren't good investment vehicles (pun intended).

I bought my reconstructed 2012 in early 2014 for $13k, and I still cringe a little to think of what it's worth now. At lease cars hold their value better than computers.

lol... "nearly". There's only 2 items so it's "half of everything" :p.

Ok fine but at least the 12V is easier (and cheaper) to replace than the HV battery. That's the one that makes or breaks the car.

When I was shopping for a used PIP late last year I found that most listings that said advance were actually base, and most that were advance did not say so in the listing. I learned to tell the difference from a photo of the steering wheel, and traveled from Missouri to New York to get my 2012 PIP advanced for $12k, comparable to prices on non-advance versions I saw. It was not listed as advance. It is a great time to buy a PIP. The 4 year old prius is generally the sweet spot to buy as it is still reliable and depreciation has slowed down substantially after four years. I still have my 2006 prius I bought at the end of 2009, I bought the PIP to expand my fleet because family needed to borrow my car a lot.

Pre-owned PiPs are getting extremely difficult to find. There are very few at auction. I used to stock 10-12 of them at all times and could reload as fast as I sold them but now only have two in stock and the wholesale prices are about $2000 higher than they were 6 months ago. If you have one and want to sell it hold out for full price. Do a quick search on Autotrader or Cargurus and you will see there aren't very many available for sale.

Nissan Leaf wholesale prices have gone up $2500-$3000 just in the last 2 months because of the export market. Most of the lease turn ins are being shipped out of the country(mostly to Jordan).

If you are thinking about buying a used Leaf scoop one up before the exporters get them all.
