Prius Prime and spare tire

I've read several mentions of people doing that. Hopefully someone with real experience will tell you more.

 

I'm pretty sure it'll work. My reasoning:

1. AFAIK 4th gen and 3rd gen rims are swappable.
2. With my 3rd gen, for snow tires, I'm using the 15" stock steel rim from Corolla, something like model year 2003~2008. The part number is 42611-02471.
3. If a stock 2003~2008 Corolla rim will fit, more-n-likely the spare will too.


FWIW, our stock rims are 17".

Well you haven't posted your age young Bisco, but I'll be 68 this year. Most of the folks on this forum are old farts, though slightly younger than this fart. Age is truly a state of mind. I know 30 year-olds that are much older than me. I think it's about having a sense of wonder and humor that keep a person young. And of course, dating a hot 30 year-old probably helps too, although I'm not there yet!

i'm 62, and the spare around my waist hasn't proved removable.

 

62 here also. Sometimes feel 32, sometimes 72.

 

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Toyota emergency service which is available to flatbed your disabled Toyota to nearest dealer for, I think 3 years for your Prime. It's not as good as having your own fix-it-yourself spare, but at least you're not totally up the creek. My last experience with tire trouble did allow me hobble to a repair shop. Overall have had as much trouble with tire failures as there are honest politicians.

they are building a new house down the street, and my wife picked up a screw and a nail in the same tire. 2 plugs, but was able to get to the gas station.
toyota or triple a are great services, but if i'm capable, i'd rather slap another wheel on there and get to my destination, vs calling for help, waiting for them to arrive, riding with the truck driver to a dealer and waiting for repairs. (if the dealer happens to be open)
no, i haven't used the spare tire, but i haven't used my life insurance either. thankfully.

Agree with all aspects of your comment PLUS ONE more negative, you put that gunk in your tire and it's ruined, but not to worry, Toyota will provide a brand new tire for $260 plus. And that's what I think the whole spare tire scam is about! Not Wt, not efficiency, not mpg ! Now be patient Toyotas waiting patiently for your other three tires to fail! TOYOTA HAS LOST CREDIBILITY WITH ME on this one issue,

Please don't tell me other car company's are doing the same thing, who cares?

Most dealers are aware of nothing. Keep it, not a problem. But, don't trade your Gen 3, sell it on Craig's list.
Compare what dealer will give you on a trade to what he wants to sell it for. The difference is often $5000 plus. Deal only local. Write a human add, friendly, talk about mileage. There are many people that would like a Prius but don't know anything about one. They will come to you!

A spare tire needs to be strapped down. In case of very hard braking or a front end collision, the spare tire will become an unguided missile inside the car. Aimed at the back of your head.

Why do people write about going to the dealer for a flat tire or a new tire? Any tire shop will do. Perhaps the dealership will have the best price, but one needs to check. And, the wait at the dealership may be longer.

 

Jose at America's Tire in Anaheim just quoted me $120 for a 15" wheel and tire that will serve as a spare for unspared () Prii.
He has those in stock. He can special order a space saver tire (16" ?) and wheel for $180; takes about 2 business days to get. America's Tire are nationwide and even Virginia has 'em, !!

My Toyota dealer pretty much blew me off on getting a space saver tire. I finally got one of the parts guys to quote me the rim (special order, 2 days) only, for about $160. I'd have to go to a tire store for the space saver tire. They also seemed confused regarding the size of the assembly: I still don't feel confident about the information, is it a 16" or 17" special space saver wheel/tire assembly? You'd think it would be better to get the space saver (bigger diameter, but smaller overall than the street wheel/tire), but it's pricier and difficult to get.
