I'm awaiting my Prime that should arrive in three weeks. My wife will be getting the PiP. I am curious on your thoughts comparing the two? And what made you switch over to the Prime?
Duh! 10 miles vs 32 miles Posted via the PriusChat mobile app. Also the added heat pump, The only way to get heat in a PIP was kick in ICE Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
The 2012 PIP was: Only only 9miles or less EV range Much louder Less power Rattly feel of doors; cheaper quality of materials. WAY less tech features, including missing LED lights, JBL radio, big screen, HUD, BSM, Rear alert for cars and pedestrians, Auto Hi beams and wipers, radar cruise control, self parking, traction override, Lane control, etc. WAY better car, oh yeah, Softex is great! .
I bought one of the first PiP off the boat. I was proud of my Clean Air Decal #00005, so at first, I was a bit hesitant to get the Prime. But when I did a test drive, and realized that the Prime was a serious EV as well as a very efficient hybrid. With the PiP, you just assumed that pretty much for any drive, that you would accelerate just a little bit too hard, and ICE will come on and at least go through its warmup cycle. The Prime has good acceleration using only the electric motors. With the increased battery capacity, we pretty much don't use any gasoline unless we go on trips out of town. I was also impressed by all the new driver assistance features (lane-departure warning, DRCC down to 0mph, blind-side alert, front and rear proximity warnings, parking assistance, automatic windshield wiper and high beams). And (thanks for the reminder, PriusCatPrimeGuy), the heat pump so you don't have to run the ICE to get heat.
The prospect of going all month on EV, since most of my round trips are within 35 miles. The Prime is smoother, quieter, regens more, no ICE to use heat and using climate control uses less electrons. My lifetime mpg with the Pip was 95 or so. With 240v evse in garage, it's very easy to make 2 trips in a day. First Fillup stats from 11/28/16 to 3/14/17: 2928 miles 6.176 gals at pump, 1st cutoff, 43 f ambient temp, level ground 474.09 mpg at pump 23 mph avg speed while system up 93% EV driving ratio 5.2 mi/kwh avg So far in April I'm showing 884 miles and 877 mpg. That makes it easy to put up with the smaller cargo space, no rear wiper, and other quirks,
There is a fixed hybrid Ahr charge level and on top, the EV Ahr. The expanded SOC touched the EV Ahr so effectively tripling the EV energy. Also, the new transmission and power electronics are much improved. Bob Wilson
Sounds like the biggest challenge for you will be keeping all these advantages from the wife! 0PJA2 ?
One thing, the 2012~2015 Prius Plug-In had the only decent-looking 15" rims in the Prius line-up. With the advent of the Prius Prime that's history.
Totally agree!! Those rims did look much better, to heck with the 1mpg improvement of the Prime wheel/wheelcover combo. .
There were improved efficiencies with the electronics, the electric motor and the PSD. This is from the Gen 4 press release but it applies to the Prime as they use the same parts.
My estimated EV range right now is 32 miles. Unlike the PIP where the estimated range goes down. The Prime estimated range has been going up for me since November 30, 2016

In my case was overall end price for the vehicle with tradein 2010 Gen3 trim III. As example, Prius Prime Advance price 31000 including TTL & 2500 TM cash back - 9000 Gen3 trimIII tradein - 4500 Fed tax credit = $17500. Another view is 17500, which is less than several Prius 2017 GEN4 trim 4 quotes provided (the lowest quote for 2017 $18900 Gen4 trim 4 with advance Tech package with 1500 TM cash back and tradein, without TTL). Key savings are 4500 fed tax credit, 2500 TM cash back, and acceptable dealer discount. When doing the fuel savings calculation between Prius Gen3 vs Gen4 Vs Prime are small savings, but still savings.
The difference between my 2013 prius plug-in and and my prime advanced can be described in 1 word... WOW! Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
