I have found that 30 miles of driving can get me enough charge to go 15 miles on EV. But that has been with heat/defrost going.

We refueled yesterday. We got 82+ miles to the gallon.

Obviously round trips of 20 miles we can do entirely on battery. Most of our trips require some ICE support for defrost and after the battery is low.

Thanks for giving me some sense of this. I should have my Prime within the next 2 weeks and, since I can't charge at home (I'm in a condo), I've been anticipating charging while driving to work (~6 miles) - so I can give rides to my co-workers over lunch using EV. :)

Thanks, Bob. I've scouted out a couple of places that aren't too far. But I probably wouldn't go every other day (what I'd need to do to drive exclusively using EV) just to charge. Too bad we can't use level 3 chargers - I have one a block away at a Unitarian church.

Why do they have a Level 3(assume you meant DC Level 2)? What standard is it?

I hope to persuade the condo board to allow me to install what I need to charge in our shared garage - right now there is not even an outlet close to my stall. However, I wanted to drive the car for a couple of months first to learn the ins and outs of charging first. I've got a lot to learn!

I would have thought there would have been one for an engine block heater there.

It's a shared heated garage. Wonderful in Minnesota - except now for charging.

I'm thinking that it is a quick way to use up stale gasoline.

If and when I have a Prime I would try the following:
On fairly flat road drive 60 mph HV mode with completely warmed up engine and battery in the HV portion.
Find a road mark, switch to CM and reset trip meter, continue at same 60 mph until some EV miles have accumulated (5-6 will suffice 10 may be better?).
Switch out of CM to EV mode and continue at same speed until battery return back to the starting level, record the MPG on the trip meter at that finish point.
Now do the same with just HV mode (same speed, road, temp, starting battery level, warmed-up engine), at the start marker reset trip meter and record MPG on the meter at the finish marker.
    Compare both results.
Repeat all the above at 50 and 40 mph and share results.:)

If you hold down the HV/EV button for a couple of seconds while driving it will put the car into charge mode which means the ICE charges the battery.

I took advantage of charge-mode on my 1,700-mile road trip last weekend.

To my delight, the impact to MPG from charging while going 80 mph was barely noticeable. There wasn't even a performance hit. The system is clearly configured seek out optimum operating efficiency to extract electricity.

Those resulting EV miles came in handy later, when running around for dinner later in the evening after arriving at our destination and settling in at the hotel. It was also nice when droving to a coffeeshop in town for beverages before heading back out on the highway.

TY So that is what I did apparently, it held 30.5 miles for that whole trip and only dropped .4 while driving into the garage.

When you are in Charge Mode, there is an indicator for it on the display (unlike HV mode), look for it to be sure you are there...
