I took mine in about a week ago and apparently they changed the oil. I didn't think they would. They told me they won't change it again until 10,000 more miles so it will be around 15,000 miles for the 2nd change. Anyone with the same situation?

they erred. but i did that on purpose, had to fight with them, and threatened to walk. they finally relented. i'd rather get the crud out early, then go every 10k or one year.

Actually I' going in about 2 weeks for my 5k. I'll let you know. I know that they put 5k on the sticker for next change based on my 2012 v. But Toyota recommends 10k. Dealers make their money one way or the other.

I was going to change it myself at 5K after they did the 5000 mile service but I checked the oil and It looked new. And then I verified with them that they did indeed changed it.

I think 10,000 miles is way too long of an interval. I always like to be on the safe side. I remember I had a BMW X5 and they only did changes every 15,000 miles. But after 7500 miles the oil looked pretty well used. That's why I always do extra oil changes in between the recommended maintenance.

I guess I was caught off guard in a good way with the Prius prime changing the oil at 5000 miles.

Toyota USA schedule has something every 5000 miles (or 6 months), basically there's always a tire rotation and check-over, and every 10,000 miles the oil and filter change.

IIRC in the 'States they owe you two free oil and filter changes. No harm in finetuning when you get them; it's still two oil changes. Other'n the two free ones, you can do whatever interval you want, either by paying for extra, or DIY.

    G'day,

I'm curious to know what booklets/manuals you 'up-over' get when buying your new Toyota.
Down under, we get a user's manual (e.g. telling us where knobs/buttons are, how to turn things on, simple DIY maintenance and so on) and a "Warranty and Service" manual.
This latter manual lists when the regular services are, and what the dealer is obliged to do at each service.
For my Prius c, first 'real' service is 10km/6 months which lists an oil change. Thereafter the engine oil is listed to be replaced every 10km/6months.
Our '10km' is closer to your 5k miles than to 10k miles - what is your Toyota-specified situation?

Once my car's out of warranty, I can do things when I or my wallet thinks appropriate. On my past Toyota vehicle experience and my normal driving behaviour, once a year has been my usual practice - like me washing the car, "whether it needs it or not".

Nothing like cars and engines from thirty years ago!

North America is similar, regarding Owner's Manual and Warranty/Maintenance Booklet.

As you note, your 10,000 km or 6 months oil change, is close to 5000 miles or 6 months.

For another data point, 3rd gen oil/filter change in Canada is 8000 km or 6 months. Then, for the 2016 Prius, they went with the US schedule, ie: 16,000 km or yearly.

    Confrusing enough??

I don't much care, and being 3rd gen, I stick with the Canadian 3rd gen edict: 8,000 km or 6 months. And what with our current usage being well shy of 10,000 kms yearly, the oil changes are more like 6 months and 4000 kms (if that).

Being DIY it's cheap for me, and keeps me off the streets.

With our previous Prius hybrids, the engine typically ran about 90% or higher on each mile. But it was 'unloaded' compared to a regular car, ~30-50%, because the hybrid drive train. But I could never see a strong reason for 5k and 10k changes and switched to Spring and Fall. But the Prius Prime throws mile determined oil changes out the window.

I can drive hundreds of miles without running the engine. To make the service history look anything 'normal', I have to change my driving profile.

In aviation we have a Hobbs meter that records the time the engine is running. Maintenance is driven by the elapsed Hobb's time. This would be a much better metric than miles.

Here in the UK we have 10k or 1 year service intervals. Also hardly anyone does tyre rotation (I don't know anyone that does). I did 25k miles on my front tyres and the back ones 40k.

Feels like quite a difference between the US and UK here

with my previous hybrids i did the 1st oil change at 5k and then every 10k, but those were probably 95+% with the engine running, with the Prime I'm guessing that my EV% is easily 50%, so at 10k then engine 'only' has 5 k on it, in other words, you're changing your oil every 5k, so that schedule becomes, well, questionable. I will stick to the 10k schedule however, but with me averaging 25k+ miles/year ... i have to think about the 5k service and oil change then some more

The appear of the oil doesn't really tell you anything besides that the detergents are doing their job. An oil without any additives could look cleaner than one with them after a time, but the particles that turn the oil with additives black are just settling out elsewhere forming sludge, and acids aren't getting neutralized.

And many industrial pieces of equipment also use hour clocks. A smart oil monitor system like GM's would be a vast improvement for the customer over Toyota's basic mile interval.

You aren't at the mercy of independent dealers.

^ Oil change is not in the schedule at 5000 mile. That said, it's not a bad idea.

the pip has 2 ev/hv % meters. i use one for lifetime, and the other per tank of gas. granted, the engine is not always running in hv miles. but i believe prime/gen 4 tracks hv miles as only engine running, and the rest go to ev?

Shouldn't the oil be changes every 10K of the engine running ,not EV.

I would not deviate from at least doing the recommended, for the duration of the power train warranty. And, even the regular hybrid Prius spends a not insignificant percent in EV, especially around town. Personally, I stick with the schedule, miles or distance, whichever comes first.

Sure it's debatable, but pick your battles. I'd rather have a few too many oil changes, however you define that, than compromise warranty claim, or find out the hard way, that the US 10,000 mile interval was kinda too long to begin with.

A total mileage recommendation for a plug in hybrid is just stupid. I have no idea of the mileage the engine has run with 5k now on our car. An hour meter for the engine, or an algorithm for engine use, or mileage for just HV service would be much smarter. We'll get the 5k service one of these days--check all fluid levels (I've done that), rotate the tires (I've done that), inspect everything--but this will be the first Prime the local dealer has ever had in their shop. And, they can reprogram some things like the dratted back up beeper.

Nothing wrong with 10k oil changes, actual 10k on the engine. My '96 Volvo 850 turbo got 10k oil changes with a premium 5W-40 oil, and it was still running strong at 202,000 miles when we sold it We could see the camshafts through the oil filler port, and everything was clean. Modern engine machining & materials, modern oils, modern clean gasoline makes all the difference. If anyone wants to do early oil changes, consider a couple of oil analyses. Blackstone Labs does an oil analysis for $28. Too much for every oil change, but if a couple show good oil life remaining at 5k or whatever, one can extend their oil changes and save money in the long run.

The Prime takes full synthetic 0W-20 oil, so that will be a long lived oil. I'm doing 10k with a bit of guilt--I know I'll be throwing away oil with some good life left in it.

On my Gen3, they did only only because I waived the 5k service and chose to consume the 10k service early. The maintenance schedule does not call for an oil change at 5000 miles.

BTW, when taking 'free' oil changes early, any skipped 'free' non-oil services (5k, 15k) are cancelled, not postponed to be harvested later.
