    Hello.

    I`m new on this forum and i`m sorry if i fail to post it at the correct section.

    I want to buy a new car and my options are an Auris Touring Sports Hybrid(2017) or Prius Gen4.
    Since i live in Europe and in my country Prius Plug-in is not avaible i have the two option above.

    The price difference between the two is around 9000 Euros. The Auris has also a 1.8L (136hp combined) motor and my guess is that is based on Gen3 (correct me if i`m wrong), and the consumption is bigger than Pri with 0.9 from official documents.

    Auris is pretty well equipped but it missed some features that Prius have, like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control but that will save me some money .

    Since space is a big problem for me, and i think in the future i will have a child i am considering the Auris TS.

    Anyone knows the differences between the two? Any advice?

    Hi - I had the same dilemma - it's called a Corolla Hybrid here. I ended up with a PRIUS.

    I didn't like the petrol Corolla, the Hybrid was a nicer drive, but felt more like a Corolla still. The PRIUS had a more dedicated "HYBRID" feel, partly I guess with the display etc. The Corolla was smaller, but I think the seats were better. And it was about $7-8000 cheaper.

    The PRIUS was much better equipped than the Corolla - RADAR Cruise (after experiencing it, I wouldn't have a car without it), Autonomous Emergency Braking (again, wouldn't be without it) and Heads Up Display (dittto - great if you drive with progressive lenses) are probably the main ones. I don't have BlindSpot Monitoring on my base PRIUS, but there is Lane Change warning. TOYOTA has equipped every country with different specifications, called the colours by different names etc just to confuse everyone, so check what your local equipment level is.

    You're right, the Corolla is based on the Gen 3 PRIUS technology. The Gen 4, while it is advertised with less power than Gen 3 gets along better and doesn't miss the "missing" power, and, yes, is more economical.

    Thank you for your answer.

    I test drive both, i liked the Auris (Corrolla) and also the Prius. The level of equipment on the Auris is the highest, as for the Prius is the lowest. Auris is misisng the Radar Cruise ( it haves a standard Cruise Control).

    The Auris has all the Toyota safety sense included in the price:
    - Lane departure warning ;
    - Autonomous Emergency braking;
    - Automated headlight switching ;
    - Reading speed limitation signs;

    As standard safety pack:
    - VSC;
    - EBD + BA ;
    - ASR;
    - 8 air-bags ;

    Local salesman told me it`s a Gen4-based, but i think he talks bs, and doesn`t know.

    Yes, as I said, the specifications are country specific, so it sounds like your Auris is much better equipped than our Corolla. The Corolla is definitely based on the old Gen 3 PRIUS.

    The Auris is based on the Gen 3 Prius. The only ones with the updated system, as of this writing, is the Gen 4 Prius and the CH-R. Of course, the improvements will be passed on as other Toyota hybrids get redesigned/updated.

    The Gen 4 without a spare tire (if that's available in your country) will have the largest boot and will nearly match the Auris TS' boot space. (Prius = 502L, Auris TS = 507L). Of course the Auris TS will have more space if you fold the rear seats because of the squared-off rear design giving more vertical room than the sloping roof of the Prius. A Prius with a compact (temporary) spare tire has 457L of boot space.

    Radar cruise on the Prius is the type that works down to 0 km/h. Not all Toyota radar cruise work to 0 km/h (The Gen 3 Prius only works down to about 30 km/h and cancels below that speed, just like regular cruise control).

    I would drive both and see which one you like. The new Prius has been designed to take advantage of the electric motors moreso than the Auris. You'll feel it's more lively in city speeds as Toyota recalibrated the hybrid system. The new double wishbone rear suspension and TNGA chassis may make it more fun to drive.

    Auris did get a Retuned hybrid powertrain, whatever that means :D It probably behaves more like Prius (lower revs) but it probably still lacks in fuel consumption for around 0.5 l/100 km.

    Prius has more space in the back seats, consider this when you mount rear facing car seat. Trunk usability is around the same. But it all comes down to price, 9000 EUR diference is A LOT are you sure about it? In my country the diference in similar equipment is more like 5000 EUR.

    Is the AURIS a sedan or hatchback? We don't get Corolla HYBRID in sedan, only hatch, and the boot size is considerably smaller than PRIUS. One of our journals says the following:
    "Boot space is another win to the Prius, with its liftback hiding a handy 457 litres of cargo capacity, easily eclipsing the Corolla’s 360 litres of boot room (that’s not great by small hatchback standards, either). At least the hybrid bits don’t eat into boot space, with the battery packs hidden under the rear seats of both the Corolla and the Prius."

    On test, they achieved about 0.5 l/100 better in PRIUS, and it uses standard octane petrol, unlike Corolla (and Gen3) which demand more expensive Premium fuel. They also said that PRIUS was more driveable:
    "... the Prius is a smoother operator than the Corolla Hybrid, which is essentially running the previous-generation Prius’ running gear. The Corolla’s power delivery isn’t quite as smooth, with a delayed reaction from a standing start due to the throttle calibration. You get used to it, but the Prius is quicker to jump, and it is generally more refined than the Corolla as you accelerate".

    Drive them both, measure the boot-space.

    He means Auris TS - Touring sports it's estate version of your Corolla:

    Gen3 Prius and Auris in EU never demanded Premium fuel and I doubt that is the case in Australia.

    Ahh - they dropped the Corolla wagon here 9 or 10 yrs ago - it was very popular, in fact I had it as one option to buy at the time.

    This is Gen 3 owner's manual:

    This is TOYOTA Corolla HYBRID website:

    And with 95 being about 12 cents/litre more, it makes a difference to running costs (fortunately not 98, which is 17 cents/litre more).

    In Europe the lowest octane rating is 95 and both Prius and Auris digest it

    It may be true, but that doesn't help OP, since he is from Romania where 95 is the lowest rated octane fuel you can buy.

    Also note that there was two different compression ratios in Gen 3, American market got 13:1 and European got 14:1, I have no idea what Australia got but it may be true that all Gen 4 versions around the world "digest" lover octane petrol. But as I pointed out this is not gen 4 advantage in EU.

    Yes, he was asking about the Touring Sports, which is the wagon/estate version.

    Regarding the price, that is 8718 Euros more for the Prius to be more precise. I think they are more aggressive here towards other companies in a certain segment because in my country u don`t see a Toyota often.

    I own a Golf 5 Estate ( 8years ) with DieselGate in which i am very disappointed , high maintenance, oil everywhere under the hood, low reliability, costly parts, noisy, oil consumption 2L in 10k km. I went to VW and due to the fact i buyed 3 cars from them i demanded that they make a serious offer for new golf 7 estate with trade-in the actual car . Neither in this day they didn`t call fact that points out their interest in customer care. I`ll never ever buy a VW/Audi again. So i looked onto Toyota which everyone says it`s a good car.

    The Auris TS is very well equipped ( better than my golf ), it has even hill assist, electric adjusted driver chair, 17`` alloy wheels and so on. I like the Prius also but it is very expensive here. Auris TS cost is around 20000 Euros and Prius around 28500. I`ve seen people are reticent to new generations of cars in the beginning so i think i will go on Auris TS.
