The "radar emblem" is actually -part- of the radar unit. It won't work if you sub. some other type of emblem. It has to be transparent to millimetre radar. It may cost more to make, or it may just be a low use part, and the storage cost adds up. I suspect a combination of the two. Most emblems are nickle plated for the shiny bits. That won't work here.

Read an account here that plexiglass works. Doesn't have the emblem though.

So with sensors like this behind the emblem, does that mean if you plasti dipped the emblem black, it wouldn't work correctly?

I'm afraid I don't know how well microwaves pass through rubber. If you have access to a car with the radar sensor, you could put some plastidip on a sheet of saran wrap or something, tape it over the sensor, see if it still works.

If you do try this, please report your results back to the hive mind here that it may grow.

Deer hit.JPG I had my prime premium for 3 weeks and a deer ran out in front of me. I put on the breaks but knew i was going to hit it. The pedestrian auto breaking kicked in and lunged me forward. I still hit the deer but just enough to smash the emblem and plastic and dent the hood slightly. The emblem was almost $500 as said, but, there is a plastic bracket on the radar unit that the emblem mounts to. The entire perfectly good radar unit had to be replaced $700 more!

    What was the speed?
What is "lunged me forward" mean? You were restrained by the seat-belt and shoulder harness?

that expression had me baffled too. Almost sounded like the system didn't work .... ah-la the so-called suden acceleration scenerio of years ago, which was in many instances, folks stomping the wrong pedal.

Perhaps he was sitting on the seat belt? That would 'lunge' him forward.

I think it's more likely that the ABS just kicked in.

"Auto-braking" should NOT be a factor if you already are braking hard.

    Lunge definition
a sudden forward thrust, as with a sword or knife; stab. any sudden forward movement; plunge. verb (used without object), lunged, lunging. to make a lunge or thrust; move with a lunge.

Yes I was already breaking. when I was about 10 feet away the breaks locked up hard. Not ABS.
The tires were smoking. the airbags did not deploy so i assume i was going under 5mph on impact

Also got a message on the display reporting that the collision was recorded by the camera and can be accessed by police or for insurance purposes !!

And I believe that your assumption is wrong.

The ABS probably was active during your braking and when your speed dropped below a certain threshold the ABS de-activated and allowed the wheels to lock or to mostly lock.

About the only other possibility is that you weren't braking hard enough to start with.

I attended an advanced driving course at Sonoma Raceway and we were taught that a common error for drivers in emergency situations is that they don't brake hard enough.

We practiced learning to brake without regard for skidding - I was surprised how well modern cars respond even when pressing the brake to the floor.

One of the functions in the Automatic Emergency Braking in cars such as the Prius is to increase the sensitivity of the brake pedal to enhance any braking the driver is already doing.

looking back if i had slammed on the breaks at first site of the deer i probably would not have hit em.

    Check.

I did quite a bit of "skid practice" when I was young......and ABS didn't yet exist......and disk brakes weren't very common either.
I learned to minimize the lockup manually and that skill doesn't match ABS well at all.

    STOMP, STAY, STEER.

Interesting configuration - similar to tesla's configuration from ~4 years ago. But modernly, they discovered that one camera looking forward simply wasn't enough, because accidents started to happen as idiots drivers were extremely unattentive. Tesla increased their car's ability to see recently. Here's a pic of their collision avoidance 'seeing' system as of Oct 2016 - it's utilizing camera, laser, & radar.

In addition to way more comprehensive vehicle awareness, the onboard computers are 40X faster - to increase their vehicle's detection time as well as stopping reaction. Bottom line - Prius is capable of running into a deer that crosses the road, so - Toyota may already be looking into the same kind of more comprehensive upgrade - increasing there vehicle's ability to see & react.

    I think you are mistaken.

Elon has stated that Tesla has no plans to use Lidar ( Tesla still has no plans to use LiDAR in consumer vehicles, but does use the tech for ‘ground truthing’ | Electrek ). So there is no laser.

The three sensors are cameras with different focal length lenses. ( Tesla Autopilot 2.0: next gen Autopilot powered by more radar, new triple camera, some equipment already in production | Electrek ) to give multiple views of the road. They are used in conjunction with the radar in a similar way to the Prius but more advanced processing.

Missing the forrest for all the trees. Ie, those electrek articles - both from last year seem to contradict each other as one says that laser/radar 'will be' being used while the other (apparently earlier article) contradicts the former. Either way, the point apparently got missed. That Prius Prime accidents still happen - despite the single forward-looking camera, coupled with Toyota's present day ECU processing speed. Still - regardless of what newer - forward looking system tesla uses .... call it triple cameras to simply avoid thought derailment. I'm sure Toyota isn't going to wait until it's a human being (in stead of a deer) that runs across the highway, right in front of a Prius ... & huge wrongfull death lawsuits spring forth. A newer/better accident avoidance capability is likely already on the Toyota drawing board. It's similar to rear facing cameras available in the 1980's, or padded dashes in the 1960's. Once the 1st manufacturer starts rolling them out, all the other manufacturers are pretty much obliged to increase their own safety standards because the technology is available & plaintiff's attorneys will certainly argue that they should have followed suit because the safety standard is obviously saving lives

One would wonder, if an LED burns out, do you need the entire US $1600 light replaced? If so...TOYOTA, you better cover these things under the extended warranty. That much money for a burnt out bulb is not smart.
