I feel ya, but the whole "cars don't kill people, people kill people" argument has already been tried and found wanting.
Welcome to dot.gov regulation....or America's continuing struggle to eliminate the beneficial side effects of natural selection.

    Studies?
    Yeah right....
"Statistically" , you're either 100-percent right or all the way wrong, because if you have to throw out less than half of the data to validate your hypothesis (or the person paying for the study!) then it's "valid" science.
    Buy enough studies?
    .....and it's repeatable. :)
    Pay enough People?
    ......peer reviewed. :D

That's why coffee will either kill you or prolong life.....depending on whether it's an even year or an odd one.

Yes....but what about all of the bureaucrats and lawyers that will be out of work????

My accessory shop in Midway City, here in OC Calif. researched a driver-controlled alarm for warning Presbyterians when you back up your stealthy little car. Complete with installation: under $200. I just haven't had time to install yet, but planning on it.

    Merged.

Problem with horn when backing up: it's pointing the wrong way. Also no matter what direction, horn is too loud and will startle the beejeezus out of these inattentive folks! I'm not trying to scare them; I just want to alert them.

I bought my Prime in NJ, not sure if it matters, but today I was in a parking lot tunnel going 7 mph with the window down and radio off, never heard anything. Is there a setting for this or am I just real hard of hearing.

So you don't support actually gathering evidence. Odd.

So, you're using one data point to counter a sample of thousands. Now we know you know nothing about statistics.
So, none of your cars need pedestrian detection or any other automated safety features. That is, if you are taking responsibility for your actions as a driver.

A couple of people have asked but I haven't seen the answer and I am wondering as well. Is this warning supposed to be present on all Primes? I haven't heard mine make the noise either. Thanks in advance.

I honestly do not know if it is just a California thing. I wouldn't imagine it is.. I have had it on my last 4 Prii...

It sounds like a grinding sound at the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. It's not very loud. Turn off your air, roll down all your windows, and slowly pull into your garage. If you live in a noisy area, the sound might be mitigated by the ambient noise.

Yeah I don't think mine is making it. And I didn't see anything in the 900 pages of manuals :)

It's present on all of them, and it's virtually impossible to hear unless you're both inside a structure and have the windows rolled down. I listened for it and I couldn't hear it at all in normal use from inside the car with the windows up and the radio off.

My 2012 PIP did it, but I haven't heard the noise in my Prime. Maybe it's the soundproofing; I rarely have windows open. I'll check it out tomorrow in garage.

I'm going to try it tomorrow also. All windows down, 5 mph, radio off, in a parking tunnel. There are never any other cars around, so no ambient sound. Oh yeah, and my head sticking out the window. :)

I would not advise someone on a public forum to attempt to fraudulently hide the fact that they removed a required safety feature. If you are going to remove it, then own up to what you did if you are in an accident.

I'd say to leave it alone. It is hard to understand why it is such a problem to anyone.
The thing that grinds on my ears is the sound of gas engines.
Let's work on getting rid of more of those noises.

Then when all the cars are too quiet in a parking lot making this required humming noise we could require pedestrian detection hardware and software to only make the noise if someone is near and staring at their phone...or better yet, make it sound the noise on their phone.

i don't think it's required by law until 2018. but it has been on all u.s. prius models since 2012. the only time i can hear it is rolling in or out of my garage with the windows down.
i could be wrong, but i thought gen 4 came with 3 adjustable sound levels.
