Source: VW Gets EPA Approval to Sell Off Remaining 2015 Diesels | TheDetroitBureau.com

Volkswagen has reached an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency that will allow it to sell off about 67,000 diesel vehicles that have been in limbo since the EPA accused the German maker of cheating on emissions tests in September 2015.
    . . .
The new agreement will allow VW to upgrade the engine and control systems to comply with U.S. emissions standards – as well as the tougher standards in place in California and 11 other states.

The exact timing for dealers to resume taking orders is uncertain, however, VW noting in its statement, “We are still finalizing the details of this program and will provide more information on its implementation at the appropriate time,”

This could mark the last time U.S. consumers will be able to purchase a Volkswagen diesel.
    . . .

Another threat to Ioniq sales arrives just in time.

A little early, but thanks for reminding me to avoid the internet tomorrow.

As for the OP, this should have been expected with an agreement for a fix to cars already in people's hands.

    The actual story is fascinating:

W Va University was just the hired gun to perform on-road testing. They had no inkling of the fraud until the results came in.
The group that hired the US Uni was a German Enviro group that thought VW had magic engineering to lower emissions that was only being marketed in the US to comply with our local regulations, and they hoped to publicize the technology in hopes of it being used in Germany. So they too had no inkling of the fraud until the results showed the massive on-road emissions.

During the trials, VW engineering kept tossing out red herrings including a recall, software patch that made it worse.

It seems sometimes the car by accident would keep the emissions on and that would cause it to wear out and throw a code. So VW protected the emissions hardware by making sure it stayed off in the CHEAT mode.

Exactly; this is the crux of VW's motivation to cheat that is not widely understood: the emission reduction technologies in concert mostly worked adequately for regulatory compliance, but was expensive and had awful reliability.

Fortunately, other companies are willing to improve the technology instead of cheating.

If you mean switch to EV and petrol plug-ins, I agree. Diesel trucks are going to be with us for a while, but diesel passenger cars for the middle class is brain dead.

The BMW tested with those VWs wasn't cheating, and others are able to get test tighter scrutiny.
And at this moment, diesel has a better chance of being replaced by a renewable, drop in fuel.

They only recently got the ok from the EPA to sell them. All the 2017 diesel models were also tested by the agency with additional tests, like on road ones.
