Fuel Additives

The air after the aircleaner isn't perfectly clean - if it was, the airflow would probably not exist. My VOLVO had the throttle plate cleaned at about 200,000kms (?), and it didn't look "dirty". I commented that it looked "OK" to the technician, and he said that it's meant to be shiny clean - which is how he left it. Whatever he did, it got rid of the flat-spot for about $50.00.

That's what I thought. Is throttle plate cleaning really necessary though?

Throttle plate cleaning ... um no. Might they be confused with MAF cleaning? This, however, is something that does need to be done.

 

TPS will need cleaning if the edges are starting to develop build and prevent TPS to come to full 0 position...where MAF will be much more sensitive to any dirt or oil residues....
Maf is directly related to fuel ECU map...

Oxygen sensors are also replaceable parts...they don't last forever....with poor tune up and neglect they will fail to read true reading before and after the CAT...
60+ K miles they should be checked and replaced if necessary..this could be done visual..or using Techstream software.....
MAF....Sprak plugs....oxygen sensor and health of CAT are directly related to Effectively make best efficient engine...that we see as MPG....
There is many other aspects to make MPG better or worse....but this is another discussion...

Unfortunately for me, I will probably defer this type of maintenance until a code is set, but where do I find the technical details to perform this maintenance, other than the Toyota repair manual?

Well, I generally feel claims of wonder probably well overstated. And I hear my money actually crying as it leaves.
But I do occasionally run a treatment of Techron through my vehicles.

My logic is that I'm pretty sure it doesn't hurt. If it does help at any level? -Then good for me.
And if the placebo effect makes me feel $7.95 better about my car and maintenance? Then I got my money worth.

 

I use techron twice a year. The engine runs smoother afterwards.

So I don't mind using it.

 

And once AGAIN you make a nasty comment without indicating who or what the comment actually refers TO.

I think you need to clean up your act first before you throw rocks at others.

I'm hoping an Oil Catch Can install in the Positive Crankcase Ventilation circuit might at least slow the accumulation of soot in the Exhaust Gas Recirculation circuit, since that seems to be the main culprit contributing to the oil/crud that builds up in the intake manifold. Maybe.

Apart from that: periodic, say every 100K kms or so, tear into it and clean it, the whole thing with Brake Cleaner, and follow up with repeated soaks of the cooler with a strong/hot solution of OxyClean.

In Lagos, Nigeria, we sometimes use fuel additives to cleanup those carbon crabs. But at that, it seems not to achieve the needed results, so, we tend to remove e the injectors and physically clean them up.

PS: Fuels here, ha e for somewhat poor quality.

I put Brut aftershave in mine, it doesn't do anything but the exhaust smells nice.

 

Only because you're riding in front of the trail pipe. Those downwind feel the 'Enry Cooper effect. Splash it on!

 

FWIW, Henry copper was a British heavyweight boxing champion and the only boxer to put Cassius Clay on the canvas even if he eventually lost the bout. Point was that he advertised Brut Aftershave on TV UK.

 

Instead of an additive for the purpose of cleaning the fuel system, what’s the going theory on the once in a while cleaning value of a full tank of premium unleaded fuel? I drive in a high altitude location, therefore I can use regular unleaded instead of mid grade. So the high octane premium is a good jump up.

 

Prior to 1995 in the US, Premium gas had more detergents than Regular. Then the EPA regulated the minimum allowed detergent levels and gas companies all gravitated to the minimum allowed. Some automobile manufacturers in 2004 promoted a higher level of detergents called Top Tier.

If you are using a Top Tier gas, the grades all have the same detergents.

"The Top Tier standards must apply to all grades of gasoline or diesel that a company sells, whether it is economy (low-octane) or premium (high-octane)"

 

The regular grade is fine even at sea level. No need for mid-grade octane here.

 

Premium fuel does not automatically have more "detergent" additives than Regular so you are wasting your money. And that is not a "theory".

Add a bottle of Techron twice a year. Cheaper and you will know what you are getting.
