Charging cable stuck in PIP - Any ideas?

Uuummm...I believe the little metal clip piece is part of the receptacle itself...may not be cheap to replace from the dealer...

 

is it charging okay?

 

The car does still charge fine at home with the OEM charger.

The Toyota service center I brought it into wanted to charge $800 to replace the entire assembly due to the broken metal clip. I opted to not do that.

 

If you want it fixed, it should not be hard to find a used receptacle on eBay or a new one on an online Toyota parts site and then put it in yourself or have the dealer do it

I believe I've found the charge port. Part # G908147030 and it's $178 online plus shipping. Will vary a bit depending on which site you use. Also found a good used one on ebay for $108, item # 151701577208

 

I wonder if you cannot just bond back this metal piece to its plastic base?
Allits function is to protect the plastic base from wear due to the latch slide.

Yeah, I think I'll plan to glue it back on once the weather improves a bit here in Minnesota. Garage is not the warmest place to hang out in December

Note!
If the inlet port assembly is made of Polyethylene or Polypropylene (which I think it is) then regular adhesive may not work properly.
These materials have "low surface energy" and require special adhesive to do the job, usually 2 components, one is a primer to increase surface energy of the base material.
Search the web or consult your local hardware store for suitable adhesive.

 

I just had this same problem. I noticed the charger becoming harder to attach over the past month. Recently my wife stopped being able to get it plugged in to charge. Then this morning, the charger would not unplug. The solutions above worked for me. I had to unbolt the 4 bolts that attach the receptacle to the car. Then it came out far enough that I could push the metal piece down and get it unplugged. Removing the orange rubber seal inside the plug solves the problem of it being hard to plug in. I guess it will be less water resistant now, but I never plug it in outdoors anyway. In summary, it seems this is what we get for being early adopters. It will be easy to redesign the receptacle/plug to avoid this problem. Hopefully Toyota will alert owners to this problem since it seems to happen to many people after 3 or 4 years and 1000 or 2000 times plugging it in.

 

it isn't less waterproof without the o ring. that's the lesson learned. no one uses them anymore. you can't really redesign the socket, because the j plug doesn't change.
