I added a catch can... Now that start knock has pretty much stopped but after 300 miles. There was alot of water and gas. In the catch can. I'll post the pictures in my media folder.

Catch can required for volume? Water in the catch can? Have you checked radiator coolant level? Internally-leaking head gasket or cracked head?

Folks, this is NORMAL. I boroscoped 3 of my cars at 50,000-80,000 miles and they all look like that. I didn't do it on my 2010 prius due to difficult spark plug access.

Enough blowby liquids to require a catch can is not normal.

i was referring to boroscop pictures.

as for that oil in catch can, some cars do it more than others. when i removed intake manifold from my prius (for cleaning and PCV valve replacement) there were fair amounts of oil inside. Same in corolla. I don't know why. Have you checked yours?

Dry, as it should be. If you see oil, check the PCV. If you see water, check for quantity loss, head gasket, and do a cylinder leakdown test.

You get blow by, you get mist in the crankcase, the PCV valve is used to allow the needed pressure relief but there is oil that passes through the valve in small quantities. Some cars use an Air Oil Separator (AOS), even that sometimes fails and isn't 100% effective.,

I think the condensation in the intake with the oil blowby is what causes start knock.. After putting in my catch can.. I do not get start up knock anymore.

You can see the condensation. That causes the start knock. And oil gas mix. 20170306_004339.jpg

When I get back in town I'll post my set up and the road blocks when adding a catch can due to the fact there are two different hose sizes.

PCV was fine (they don't fail in toyotas based on my experience). I wish it was that simple.

sorry, what exactly are we looking at? Not sure of that glistening disk. is it a petri dish?

So from where does this oil, fuel, water mixture originate and how is it entering/pooling in the throttle body?

    Ughh...
That's the attitude of most car manufacturers.
The computer diagnostic systems in cars are great. But they also can be used as excuses to NOT do anything, when something should be done.
IMO that amount of carbon build up and muck in an engine within a 2015 with 50K miles is un-acceptable, even if it hasn't reached a tipping point where the operation of the vehicle is triggering codes.

Years back, I was rear ended in a new Honda Fit. I just wanted the dealership to put it up on the rack and check to see if they could see any visible damage.
All I got from the dealership service department was the same mantra...No Lights...No Problem.
I kept telling them I was SITTING IN THE VEHICLE when it was rear ended...
And just because it wasn't "yet" throwing codes didn't necessarily mean there wasn't damage.

I literally had to BEG them to just put it up on the rack and do a visual.
They eventually took the vehicle back and SUPPOSEDLY looked at it. But to this day, I don't know if they actually did, or if they were just humoring me.

    So anyway, best of luck.
Maybe with the aid of those pictures you can convince a dealership/Toyota that there is indeed a problem.
