I have been seeing these cars get cheaper and cheaper as gas continues to stay in the low $2/gal. Part of me says I should buy another just to have as a beater car, backup, etc. Maybe sell it and profit when/if gas goes back to $4-5/gal? Another part of me would rather get a newer one like 2014-2015...

I have a 2010 prius III not three now and love it. I will be at 238k miles by the end of the week. I really want to take it to 300k and beyond.

Anyways, I found a 2010 Prius IV not Four. 2010 used uppercase Roman numerals for model designation. Only 2010 used uppercase Roman numerals. near me that is in decent shape and has been maintained pretty well according to the owner who claims this is his 2nd prius and he loves Toyota's dependability for his 200 mile a day commute.

    The bad:

It burns oil like most of ours with higher miles. The owner seems to be up front about it and says he burns about 1 quart every 4-5k miles of highway driving. He is using 10w40 though. He changes it every 7,500. I wonder how much more it would be using with 0w20?

He claims it needs no work and just had the water pump done and new tires about 10k miles ago. He wants $4,800. I think I could easily get him to $4,500, maybe less.

FWIW there was also a 2010 Prius II that had 300k for $2,900 locally, but it looked rough.

Worth checking out or just walk away?

At that age you will need a Hybrid battery if you are keeping it a while.

    So factor that in somehow.

Check what Kelly Blue Book says for value.

I have a hybrid repair shop in Madison and also run the local hybrid car club. There are customers and club members that sell their cars at different times.

Not sure where you are in Wisconsin but I know of a few that are either for sale or soon to be for sale around here. Including one that will have a replacement battery in it.

Feel free to call me during business hours of you want.

I'd shoot for $4,000. That would be my goal. For a car that had a window sticker of around $28,000 I would say in 7 years of use, $4,000 is cheap for a car that was $28k.

IIRC my 2010 Prius III was $27,000 window sticker.

    maybe so.
240k just seems like a lot of miles. i sold my '04 with 95k in 2012 for $5,500. it had a sticker of 25k.
but unlike 2010, in '04, you actually had to pay sticker.

i suppose the best deal you can get is the best deal you can get. and geography matters.

    I am near Milwaukee.

KBB shows dealer trade in value of $2,400-$4,200. Private party is $3,500-$5,000

Walk away due to burning oil. Which will lead to. A failing CAT. There are a few ways that oil can get into the combustion chamber: worn piston rings or cylinder walls, worn valve seals, or a bad PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve.

I think the guy sold it. He hasn't responded in over 24 hours. That or he decided not to sell. He said he has a lien on the title with $3,500 remaining.

Walk away unless you love that specific Prius too much. 245K and burning oil means Prius was driven at higher speed consistently and/or with load as taxi. $3500 lien is another issue.. I would offer $1500 for Prius in that condition as it's likely will need a HV battery, new struts/shocks, tuning and other ICE components.
