I have a 2007 prius and I've had the P0446 code since I bought it almost a year ago. Already tried two brand new gas caps from toyota. I just cleared it enough to pass emissions. But the past few fill ups the pump shuts off 3-4 gallons too early and I have to force the tank to full manually. No drive ability issues still averaging low to mid 40's mpg. Don't have access to a smoke machine for the evap condition but I'm very mechanically inclined. I have a decent harbor freight scanner. Don't wanna start throwing parts at it yet.

It may be showing because the charcoal canister in the fume recovery circuit is contaminated by gas overflow. This is caused by constantly topping off the tank to get the last drop in the tank causing overflow of gas to get into that canister. or forcing gas into the tank by constantly clicking or holding causing sudden gas overflow.
In the last 10 years we have seen very few issues with the gas tank other than the PITA bladder.
Hundreds of threads about the bladder and not being able to fill the tank up or constantly shutting the pump off because of the bladder but other than that very few tank issues that threw codes other than the charcoal canister contamination.
I'll try to find the a picture of the fume recovery circuit in the tank system. Its loony tunes looks like Nasa designed it. Lots of parts.

Last year my 2005 with 155K had P0446 changed cap stayed off for two months. checked hose clamps fell off replaced clamps good for another 2 months. Replaced Vapor Canister Purge Valve/Solenoid, 185k mo errors. You can remove valve and test with 9V bat should hear a click when power applied.

I was leaning towards that. The rectangular black box by the gas tank?

Is this the charcoal canister above the rear of the gas tank? Also is that the purge valve mentioned earlier that's in front of it?

At the very least get a mini Vci at amazon for $25 and you'll be able to see what the car is unhappy about.
May have more than one code or a code subset thrown and your not seeing it. The mini has techstream software and can pull all codes.

Replaced the charcoal canister and the purge valve from the junkyard check engine light has been off for 900 miles. The old canister smelled like straight up gas.

could you do a little right up on how to do that? I have a similar issue - code P0446 and the tank would take no more than 6 gallons of gas even though it's empty (last gas indicator is blinking). Thank you.
