Traction battery Cooler

it's in the same place where you change charge power settings from 12 amps to 8 amps, just arrow up and the traction battery setting will show up

does the traction battery cooler send chilled liquid around the battery? or turn the a/c on and pull the cold cabin air over the battery?

 

I'm pretty sure it's not liquid cooled, but I don't know about chilled air.

Why would Toyota make it possible for an owner to turn OFF the traction battery cooling ???
Sounds like a bad idea to me.

Also, check "settings" "meter customize" "pop-up display on/off" to see if the cooler pop-up is enabled or not.

 

OK so this ONLY operates when the car is OFF and the charging cord is attached.

Therefore whatever extra power is consumed to cool the battery so charging can continue comes from the wall.
If you turn this feature off, I assume that charging will NOT occur if the battery is hot. The documentation kind of hints at that but doesn't really state it flatly.

So that answers the question of why Toyota would let you turn the "battery cooling while plugged in and charging" to OFF........but why would you want to ?? Seems like you might as well just unplug the cord.

 

wow, that seems like too much information and option for the driver. toyota should have come up with a system that takes care of itself, without input.

 

Assuming that the default for this "feature" is ON......then it does.

 

it should just stay on, and the only thing in the manual should be: the active battery cooling system is a feature designed to reduce the battery temp to optimum design before charging. or similar. but maybe i'm issuing something. who can interpret the gibberish in the manual?

 

Nice they give 8 amp in case you want to go easy on your garage circuits and give the batt kind and gentle charge.

 

I think that it does take care of it's self but it has a buggy interface.

I did a mini road trip in western mass on the Mohawk trail.
When I got back, those batteries had been exercised !

I saw the display of cooling option only momentary, and was unable to react in time.

I plugged in my L2 charger (usual charge time 1:50), and it took 5 hours to charge.

I'll try and get at the cooling setting and try again, if I can find it. Unable to find the cooling setting so far.

 

Wow, this seems like the one time when it pays NOT to read the manual. This is real headache inducing material.

If I am reading this right, in the pop-up menu settings (page 234) you can decide if you want the Traction Battery Cooler check screen to appear. Yes is listed first in the table, so I am guessing that Yes is the default.

If you change it to No in the pop-up menu settings, you will never get the Traction Battery Cooler check screen, and battery cooling will never take place. Not even at noon in Death Valley.

If you leave the pop-up enabled, the Traction Battery Cooler check screen appears, but only when you power off the car. And only if the battery is above "a certain temperature" at the time that you power off the car. Notice that it didn't say that the battery has to be hot for the message to appear, but only above "a certain temperature". So presumably it is essentially checking if you are in a warm climate and/or season. Since during winter there is no point in displaying the pop-up (as if there ever is a point?)

If the battery is above this "certain temperature" at the time that you shut down, and if you have a charge scheduled for the future, the check screen appears. If you do nothing, then "Yes" remains selected, the check screen goes away, and Traction Battery Cooling is in standby, ready to be used if needed several hours from now when the scheduled charging time arrives, but only if the battery is "hot" at the time when charging starts.

If the battery is not above that "certain temperature" when you power off the car, you won't get the check screen. But presumably the system is still enabled. Several hours later when the scheduled charging time arrives, if the battery is "hot", Traction Battery Cooling will take place.

If for some reason you don't want cooling to take place at the scheduled time, if you are lucky the battery will be at that "certain temperature" when you shut down so that you will have the option, if your reflexes are quick enough, to select No. Then ten hours from now it will not run Traction Battery Cooling even if the battery is hot when charging time arrives. Presumably you are saying No just for the next upcoming charge session, the pop-up setting will remain enabled for subsequent charge sessions after this one.

And what rationale would you be using to make this decision at the time that you are powering off your car? If someone is nervous about using Traction Battery Cooling they will likely turn it off in the pop-up settings, instead of waiting for a check screen that may or may not appear when they shut off the car.

It seems like anyone who does want to control whether or not battery cooling occurs, for whatever reason (reducing cost at a charge station?) they would most likely want to control it when they are about to use Charge Now. But it specifically says that Traction Battery Cooling will not take place during Charge Now. Not even on a Bad Day at Black Rock.

 

Starting up to 'ready' and re-shutting off may bring back the pop-up check screen?
