I am having very little luck charging my phone with the USB port. I think the phone would rather hook up for data transfer than charge the phone. After repeated tries it may decide to charge, and maybe not. Anyone else have this problem and maybe a solution? Another car I have has no problems charging the phone with a USB cable but it is an older model car.

Guy at Verzion said I should get a 12v port charger.

Of course the phone is way pre Qi.

You need rapid charger with 1.7 or more amp....and USB is trickle charger that delivers if you have top of the line cable.....0.6-0.7 amp.....just not enough.....
Anker is one of my best car charger i have used so far

A 1A charger is fine too, just slower.

USB 2 data is 0.5A. That will charge slowly if it's off or in sleep, but not if it's in use.

Definitely. More current availability than that old-version USB port, and no issues with attempted data connections.

I got this same charger for my car as well. It goes pretty well with the RED and Black interior.

Could you link that again I get a different page.

Looks like the Toyota isn't going to change so my options are a Charge Only USB cord that I didn't know they made or even needed to make. Or a 12 volt adapter plug which looks a lot better than I thought they would. I see a Aukey adapter on Amazon that looks pretty good; anyone tried Aukey?

This will NOT help with the charging; it will just stop the radio from looking for a USB music source.

P.S. This problem is not unique to Prius or Toyota even. It is very common with recent car models.

I guess I am down to an adapter for the 12v plug-in.

Why not? A charge cable will put out 1 amp instead of .5.

The charge cable doesn't provide any current at all. It just conducts whatever the USB port provides.

If the port is an old standard 0.5A version, then that is all you get, regardless of cable.

Yes, but is it? The manual gives no specifications on the port. I suspect it can only output a max of 0.5A, but may output more if it acts as a USB charging port.

    Yes.

Yeah, it does. It says, it's a USB 2.0 port, which is capable of supplying 5V at 0.5A.

That may just mean the data transfer rate. I think you're right, but I don't think we can know for sure unless Toyota specifies the output current or it is measured.

The USB 2.0 spec only allows for 0.5A to be supplied. If it's USB 2.0, it's 0.5A.

... or it may not mean 'just' that.
In the absence of a Toyota statement to the contrary, we cannot expect more than its USB standard declares.
    USB.org - USB 2.0 Documents

PriusChat has seen many reports in recent years from folks unable to charge higher current devices from the provided USB port. USB2.0 was never intended to supply these higher current devices. 12V plug-in converters to supply these higher currents are very readily available, at low cost.
