Hello, I have a Prius v with 68000 miles on odometer. Driving normally on freeway today suddenly all lights come on, ABS, Brake, (!), and VSC. Car not braking as it normally does, when press on brake white charging bars don't light up only first bar, as if braking wasn't charging he battery. Called dealer and they said to bring it in for a $75 check. Anyone know what should I expect?? First time Prius owner, terrified of a dealer repair bill, Help!

Could be the Inverter Power Module which has the extended warranty. This might explain the loss of regenerative braking.

Yes, original 12v battery. I hope whatever it is is still under warranty!

Yes, recall job was done about a year agoAlso noticed I'm not hearing the normal hissing sound coming from brake pedal. Also the whirring sound the car normally makes after you turn it off, the whirring is constantly making the sound on and off at the same time intervals; whirs for half a second, stops for about 3 seconds, whirs again, thos goes on constantly. There are no E's on the Trip Information graph bars so apparently regenerative braking is not working.

Sounds like the ABS accumulator is not successfully pressurizing

In shock as I write this... So dealer diagnosed and they say the ABS Master Cylinder has to be replaced, $3,000 quote. I have searched online and apparently not many people have had this problem so I'm not finding much help or comparison pricing, etc. I'm also worried that after they change this part they tell me something else has to be replaced. Any thoughts as to why this could have failed? Should they look at some other (hopefully less expensive) part that may be causing the issue? Don't want to lose the love for my Prius v, please help!

How much is parts and how much is labor? A serviceable used master cylinder may be a savings (or not, depends on the labor component).

$2300 parts and $400 labor plus tax. I was looking into the used parts option and found one for $550, they told me it's for the "complete ABS system, master cylinder, booster and anti-lock". I guess that would give me a little more peace of mind for in case the problem is not the master cylinder, or if anything else needs changing?

This is something that happens rarely not only on Toyota but all other cars.....
Just find good independent shop that will do this for much less.....
Or you can do yourself if you have some experience

A friend recommended a shop here that specializes in Prius. As Air_Boss suggested, they diagnosed an ABS accumulator leak and replaced the Actuator assembly, which appears to be a common problem... $1300 parts and labor with 24mo warranty. Although still expensive, a lot less than the $3000 'stealer' quote. Happy to be back in my v!!

Glad you got it resolved for cents on the originally quoted dollar -- and with a generous warranty.

I think I’ve had the same problem. The dealer took forever diagnosing it ... they’ve claimed two failed rear bearings, replaced one - $900 and two months later they claim it failed again! I don’t see how this is possible. Now they are saying it’s the actuator assembly (which they called the ABS computer) - replacement cost $3000! On a car with 120000km on it? I thought Toyota’s were reliable? This is my first Toyota and so far this car is costing me more than my mercury “mistake” (mystique) I owned way back.

They are looking now for the part from a wrecked car but said it’s hard to find.

My belief is that this is a hard problem to diagnose so they have been throwing new parts at it hoping that will solve the problem rather than taking the time to properly diagnose the problem, since that costs them money they have hard time charging to the customer.

If this is a known problem ... as it seems by this post that it is ... why the heck don’t they know about it?!

Should I stop dealing with the dealer?!

Might want to take it up with Toyota, directly.

I believe Toyota needs to recall the Prius V and replace the Brake Booster with Master Cylinder and Brake Booster. Cost me over $3000.00. The damn brakes went out on ours! It is dangerous! I tried Midas but they could not saying it had to be programmed by Toyota!

Signed up for the website just to post. I am having the exact same issue as the other. All these lights came on. I could no longer brake safely. Needed a 100 mile tow from where I got stranded. And is just shy of $3000 repair for parts and labor.
