Thanks for the helpful table. One request: can you extend to $0.30 to be future-proof? Here in San Diego it's already $0.23/kWh off peak. There must will be another rate increase this summer. When charging we are paying to save the environment.

Remember to put various fees, taxes, etc. into the equation. Mine theoretically costs 0.11 cents/kwh but after fees and taxes, it becomes 0.17/kwh.

I think we need to figure out how to put in a Google sheet so folks can tailor the table for local prices and change the vehicle.

I live in the east bay and have solar now for 7 years and at the end of the year true-up period has always been around $10.00 plus or minus, We switched mid year 2016 to EV-A plan and we just got our true-up bill of $383.00, were it gets interesting is we put on 17,000 miles on the Tesla, so I calculated I'm getting about .022 per mile.

I live in SF and have solar. Currently I have excess solar based on my current estimate from PG&E which is one of the reasons that I wanted a plug-in and I got the prime as my commute is ~24 miles round trip. Question is whether to switch to EV-A or stick with E-1. With EV-A, I would get more from making solar during the day in the summer and pay less for charging at night ($0.12/kWh). But, any electricity I used would be at the higher rate during peak hours...

I might need try a year on E-1 and then a year on EV-A and see which is more beneficial cost wise. I make ~2 times my usage in May-August and about 1/2 in the winter without charging the car. I'm still using my chargepoint credit to charge for free at work for now. :)

    Anyone have experience with this?

That's a theoretical number. In my case, I have never achieved 25 miles and 54 MPG. My numbers are 23 miles and 52 MPG. My break even number is
This calculation is based on the fact that you can achieve such MPG and MPGe. However in real world, I can't get the full 25 miles on electricity and 54 MPG on gas. My own calculation is that at the present time, burning gas and using electricity makes no financial difference at all.

I'm getting solar. From what I understand from my solar company, PG&E won't let you on E-1 if you have solar. It's ETOU-A or B, or EV-A.

Mike, that does not sound right. We are all E1 by default until we switch to another plan. I just switched to EVA last month after being on solar for 1.5 years.

    Jason,

I was wondering the same thing myself. I know I save about $1800 a year after moving to Solar. Now that I have EV and just switched to EVA, I am wondering what my true-up costs and savings would be but will have to wait a year to find out.

It is definitely harder having to deal with Peak time usages, but we were already hitting Tier3 and 4 before they removed the Tier4 so I figure it has to be lower than whatever we were using. Switching to EVA plan allowed me to get my wife and daughters to think better about saving electricity as well.

Yes, just logged in to PG&E and it says I'm on the E1 rate plan. My goal is to at least come out even with PG&E with my solar plus charging.

Of course, the compare rate tool is currently not working... Getting $0.44/kWh for the peak solar generation in the summer sounds good though!

Thanks! We are almost always in Tier 1 for our electric and have low usage so it might be better to stick with E1.

You guys must be grandfathered under the NEM 1 program. If you are under NEM 2, you have to be on a TOU plan. See All Categories - MIKE KLEEMAN

Ok, so here are the tags:

    1) create an open spreadsheet shared with everyone
    2) put in the MEDIA tags
    3) test

Then to support a 'sticky', put the spreadsheet in a new post with an appropriate title.

Right ... I remember something about that from my wife, who works for PGE. I guess I didnt realize that you cannot stay on E1 anymore.

I need to figure out what plan is better for me, ETOU-A or EV-A.
