Hello all. The rear suspension of my 29,000 mile 2015 Prius 2 has gotten pretty mushy to the point where it will bottom out/scrape when I go over certain bumps in the road and even more so driving on the beat up Southern California freeways. The mushy action is more pronounced when I have a rear passenger and or extra weight in the cargo area. Worth mentioning too is that sometimes whilst driving over bumps at freeway speeds the bottoming is harsh enough for the driver's side rear wheel well to make contact with the rear tire. Sounds like I need to replace the rear shocks at the least?? Asking first hand here as subsequent searches haven't turned up that much pertinent info. SJ
I added a Cusco anti-sway rear bar one year after buying my 2012, and at around 50k I replaced all shocks with Cusco Street Zero coilovers. Very happy, much better rear suspension. You can search threads under my name for this and related suspension write-ups. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
At 29k miles, I'd look it warranty repair before upgrading your suspension. What you describe shouldn't happen under normal conditions.
Thanks for the info Gents. @mmodem, yes, will be checking with the dealer for warranty info/coverage.
Shocks only dampen up and down motion; it's the springs that take the main load. Maybe see if you can drive a newer service loaner or demo, to compare. 29k seems early for suspension issues, could you just be talking yourself into it? Or maybe something haywire with the springs? How do you handle speed bumps btw? Slow right down? Or breeze over 'em without pause? Also, what are your typical tire pressures, just curious.
Something's not right here because I can fly over speed bumps at any speed without bottoming out. How much do your friends weigh? LOL I would be at the dealer for warranty service 1st I agree. If heavy loads is the issue here was my solution and I love these 2010-2014 Toyota Prius - Firestone Coil-Rite Air Bag Helper Springs (NO-DRILL) [REAR] [4136] | $92.95 | SD Truck Springs | Leaf Springs, Helper Springs and Suspension Parts
