2nd day with the car. Took it for a spin. This time, head in the garage as it was raining hard. Pulled up the trunk, got my stuff and later opened the garage door...... Bang! Here's the result:

    scratch.jpg

It turns out that the trunk cover is way too high. Dangerously close to the ceiling such that the garage door will scratch the cover when the door is open.

So glad I stopped it immediately otherwise the light fixture could break. That's actually the highest point.

    Never head in the garage!

That is just your garage design. Not every garage design.

Ohhh, I would be soooo mad at myself! I'm still careful of opening my trunk in my garage even though I know it'll never hit.

I've wrapped our garage door opener's trailing arm with foam insulation, after maybe the third incident: opening or closing garage door with the hatch up. Typically the door derails, which helps.

It never occurred to me to let the garage door move while I have the hatch open. Thus, in 18 years of living here, 13 with my Prius, I never have.

One of the first things I do with any new vehicle is check clearances in the garage. Length, width, and opening the hatch in several places: inside underneath the light fixture, under the garage door bottom edge when the door is up, and under the eaves. I learned to do this long ago when I backed my truck up to the garage with the bed cover door open and ran it into the eaves.

Don't forget that they added 4" to the car and that is in the hatch, so the hatch will be higher open than prior prii.

    Sorry that happened!
One way to prevent this is to keep your garage so full of stuff that you can't fit a car in there ;)

yep, been there done that. more times than i care to remember. i've foamed everything that could cause damage.
wasn't this an issue on your last prius?
some people install shorter struts or a bungee to keep the hatch from opening too high.

This has happened with all our Gen 3s and I'm afraid to put the prime in the garage. Don't tell the kids to just close the garage door, we've had the door pull the trunk up and down trying to close before giving up! Horrifying. Ok, tell them, but make sure they know about the trunk lol. I'd like to think I've learned my lesson and will put some padding up there. That Prime hatch also seems to open way higher than the Gen 3!

Bummer. Mine opens okay with garage door closed but will definitely hit it with it open.

To open it up sometimes I'll put a cloth sheet over it and slowly open it up to rest it gently as it nears impact.

Sorry to hear your damage to your new baby. OUCH! Both of my cars have powered hatches with settable height memory so we don't have to worry about this. Cheap foam pipe insulation attached to the garage door at contact points is a very popular solution.

Could someone measure the height to the highest place with the hatch open?

Almost hits my garage door. Opens up too high, in my opinion.

I noticed that immediately too when I parked my car in the garage and noticed how high the trunk opens. The trailing arm would definitely scratch the trunk for sure. Either you wait until the door completely closes or opens to open the trunk to be safe, or just park reverse as suggested.

You've got to watch in any covered parking lot too. Easy to forget.

26 years since I installed an opener on my garage door, all those years with various hatchbacks, and I never have either.

For me, not moving the garage door while the hatch is open, is easier and safer than backing into the garage.
