I remember that I could push my thumb through the sidewalls of the cheap Pirellis on Fiats.

Thanks Kitchmo, that makes sense. I remember now remember years ago when I had 4 wheel drive vehicles I think I was told to always keep the same tires, actually the same tread wear to avoid problems.

Thank you sir. :) I saw on the news that you got a little snow up on the top of those volcanoes. I never realized that Hawaii got snow.

That makes sense with a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Mis-matched tires cause adverse wear and tear on the differentials and hubs. A friend had a 4WD Dodge van, had a flat on one of the front tires and put on the spare. A 40 mile commute home and then to the tire store resulted in a couple thousand dollar repair to the front differential caused by the slight size difference between the spare and the flat tire.

My daughter drove her 4WD Pilot for months with the temporary spare on a front corner, even down to the 'States a couple of times.

We even gave her money for a new set of tires, she was busy.

Why have I never heard of "Nokian" tires? Everybody seems to give them good reviews. In the past I always just bought the first set of Michelin tires I saw, and left.

I'm not too happy with these Toyo tires. They made me a little nervous when it was raining. We are getting more rain Thursday and Friday, and I want to go out and give them another thorough test.

Mendel, in your experience, how do the "Defenders" compare to the "AS" all season? Is there any big difference between the two?

Im not Mendel but I had experience with Defenders and Priemer AS and the Premiers did much better in the rain and handled better.

Michelin used to have their factory and the testing facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland UK. One of their managers, a Frenchman was friend of a friend of mine in the late 1960's

I've never had Defenders before. Just heard good things, decent mpg (hopefully) and a long lasting tire. They're going on our son's Civic Hybrid in the spring, when the snows come off.

Nokian is limited availability, up here Kal Tire mainly in this area at least. Their snow tires are renown, and they make a couple of "all weather" tires, sort of a cross between all season and snow tire, have the snowflake.

My one Nokian experience was WRG2 and it noticeably knocked down mpg, but I believe they're improving rolling resistance WRG3. They also make Nordman, which my daughter got for her Pilot, watched her roll up her snowy driveway just now, without fanfare.

That's where I like to see the snow way up on the mountain. It does look different looking up through palm tree fronds and seeing snow.
