FWIW, the TPMS valves will work fine even if not initialized.

Yeah, basically what I'm saying: tpms on snowtires, at least for me, is a moot point. It doesn't make them more or less attractive. If I was building my own snow tire package there's no way I would shell out extra for tpms, and then be locked into the dealership for twice yearly initialization (or invest in expensive equipment and braincell study of diy initialization). But if they've got tpms, s'okay, just would install them, air them up, and ignore the light.

But that's in Canada. In the States, maybe you have to pass some safety inspection?

 

I'm too OCD to have the tire light on lol. And it doesn't hurt I have the equipment to program the TPMS.

I currently have my winter wheels (steelies with Blizzaks, no TPMS) on the car, and I notice when I park in my garage where the summer wheels (with TPMS) are stored, the NagLight stops flashing, only to start again later when it realises it is not near the wheels with the sensors. The really curious thing is that in the good weather I seldom use my garage, but the parking spot I use is about 30' higher and about 400' (in a direct line) away from my garage, and if the car has been parked overnight, when I start the car, the TPMS NagLight stays off, but starts flashing after 20 mins or so of driving! I didn't realise the TPMS transmitters had such a long range! (…might be some really weird ducting going on I suppose… )

 

Hey, just drive around with the OEM tires in the hatch.

We did have for wheels in the back today, getting new tires on loose rims (our son's car). It's a very versatile car.

I like that idea, and if my State Inspection were due in the winter, I would do just that, but the car is inspected at the end of June (my birthday (NH)) and at that time the summer wheels are on and all the TPMS NagWare is happy!

 

So will they ground you if the tpms is not functioning?

Again, @craigk is trying to sell some tires here, I've done it again. And it seems a good deal, especially with OEM rims.

 

I would argue that when the car is in, or parked in the proximity of my garage, or when the summer wheels are in the back, the TPMS system is most definitely functioning!

 

In PA, the TPMS light is NOT required to be off for safety inspection. Additionally, if the car comes to the dealer with the light on, they aren't required to fix it, but if it comes in with the light off, and they do tire/wheel service, then it must leave with the light off. I think that applies to the whole country (T.R.E.A.D. Act).
