Superchargers were free until recently, but a pay for use scheme is currently being introduced for new owners after 400 kWh each year. The cost per kWh has not been released.

 

Yes and no.
Orders placed through the end of the year get the "free for life" deal.
Orders placed anytime after the end of the year will get 400kWh of free charging annually.
After that there will be a charge. The amount will be less than the cost of gas for a similar size/type of vehicle. I expect we will be hearing what that is within a few weeks.

It isn't currently compatible with the Prius. If Toyota takes Tesla up on their offer, it may be in the future. (I doubt this will happen).

 

Even if you could charge at a Tesla Supercharger, there'd be little point. The battery in the Prime is too small to take the kinds of charge rates a Supercharger can provide.

Superchargers are primarily for cross-country, long-distance trips. The Prime does that by filling up at a gas station 50 times faster and with 2x - 4x the range.

 

it's not that tesla occupies the charging stations, it's that they built them. that's why a lot of people are waiting for the model 3.
toyota is free to build out stations if they want to, or join a group of mfg.'s to do so. (they don't want to) they don't see ev as being a long range proposition. for now, they're right. by 2025, who knows.

How many of those Chargepoint chargers are fast DC charging like all the Superchaergers?

 

None, but who cares when no car aside from a Tesla will accept that much power anyway?

 

The Bolt will, and the Leaf has had CHAdeMO since its introduction.
And why care who Toyota partners with when the Prime has an ICE for long trips?

It doesn't have enough range to need it, and Chargepoint supports CHAdeMO at many hundreds of locations.

And don't forget the i3, it has DC charging available as well.
I would be shocked if any 200 mile EVs didn't have some form of DC charging.

 

Funny, I see quite a few manufacturers have partnered with ChargePoint.
Toyota isn't listed as one of them though EV Charging Stations for Automakers - ChargePoint
There is a big difference between building SuperChargers and paying advertising money to ChargePoint.

 

Then why are they giving out $100 worth of Chargepoint charging with every Prime purchased?

 

For the same reason some companies were giving away a gas station card with each new car back when gas prices were high perhaps?

 

Prime unfortunately has no fast charge capability anyway .
Europe will not have it either !
Japans version on the other hand has !
Wasn't a good decision by Toyota to withhold fast charge capability for US and Europe.
Having to wait 2/12 or 5 hours instead just half an hour at a public charging station almost kills any reason to buy a prime if no home charging is available .

 

I can't imagine waiting half an hour for 25 miles of range. Heck, I probably wouldn't wait 5 minutes for 25 miles.

 

I am willing to wait even longer than that,because I currently have no home charge capability!
The charging station is not far away from my place and I just leave the car there on my way home from work .
I probably will be able to charge at my father's or mothers home and I will try to find a new flat with a garage .
Well and if everything goes wrong,there allways charge mode and it can be driven as a normal hybrid anyway !
Still it would be nice if Toyota would give us that quick charge capability.
30 min. may seem not fast for 45 Kilometers but way better than the estimated 3 or 2 hours charge time in Europe !

I think what Tesla is doing is pretty darn amazing.
Catering to a society that has no patience, and demands everything now.....oh and for super cheap.

 

Just looked it up - CHAdeMO in Japan is about 15kW - nowhere near the 120kW - 147kW that a Tesla Supercharger can put out. I calculated this from the claim of an 80% charge in 20 minutes.
