Today while driving with my son the topic of climate change, hybrids and such came up and we wondered aloud about jacked up diesel 4x4s, gassers, and ultimately smoking which made me wonder: Do many Prius drivers smoke? If you don't mind, please comment yes or no. No judgment. Just simple curiosity. I'll start with me. Do you smoke? No Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Tried a pipe in college for a month or so and realized it was a waste of time and money. Never looked back. My wife smoked over a pack a day when we first met. After several attempts over the next 7-8 years, she gave it up in 1985 and never looked back. Bob Wilson
I was a late bloomer, started smoking when I was around 24, in '75. Quit finally, in 1980. Hard too, took two or three attempts before it stuck.
I suspect you thought we did not smoke for ecological reasons and now realize Prius owners can do math. We dislike the cost of smoking, like we dislike the cost of idling. A better survey could tell economists from ecologists.
Thankfully, no. I took care of my elderly parents, and sadly had to watch both of them suffer from smoking related cancers. So I never had the desire to try cigarettes. I have three sisters, and none of us ever smoked. (Just don't ask me about pizza. )
Yes & No. Quit about 20 years ago. Raised in a large extended family with numerous smokers. I watched several die slow deaths from emphysema but that still didn't stop me. It took the early death of my mother that finally got me to stop. It's a strong addiction.
No. I have the same assumption as you that Prius owners tend not to smoke. I was reading a Time magazine article the other day describing the first Syrian refugees settling in a small town in the middle of the US. It described how they used to be a middle class family with a nice home, 4 kids, stay at home mom, and annual vacations in Syria. Now he's a dishwasher and she cleans hotel rooms taking a nearly 2 hour bus ride to work that takes 17 minutes to drive. How sad their income now just barely covers rent and they depend on subsidies to survive. How can I help? I thought. Then I see the photos on the last page and the dad is smoking. Well, I guess they have plenty of money.
No. Like Bob, I tried a pipe briefly and while on submarines I used to use smokeless tobacco. (that aspect of the Silent Service never makes it into books or TV... ) It's amazingly hard to stop using tobacco products. Fortunately, my 32 years working for dot.mil kept me from being a stoner, so I'm not that kind of smoker either.
Both my wife and I quit smoking for the 1979 Great American Smokeout. We agreed to quit before starting a family and both were successful.
