Can somebody else who has LDA w/steering assist please comment on it's effectiveness? I don't feel it working at all, unlike Lane Keep Assist that I had previously. Driving in heavy traffic, just changing audio is a challenge now whereas it wasn't with LKA. It feels less safe than LKA. Is there an adjustment of the steering assist that a dealer can make? If this is the new normal, I believe Toyota made a HUGE step backwards in removing LKA. Comments?
Steering control function This function operates when all of the following conditions are met in addition to the operation conditions for the lane departure alert function. • Setting for “ (LDA Steering Assist Mode)” in the screen of the multi-information display is set to “On”. (→P. 231) • Vehicle is not accelerated or decelerated by a fixed amount or more. • Steering wheel is not operated with a steering force level suitable for changing lanes. • ABS, VSC, TRAC and PCS are not operating. • TRAC or VSC is not turned off. OM, Page 386. ■Steering control function Depending on the vehicle speed, lane departure situation, road conditions, etc., the driver may not feel the function is operating or the function may not operate at all. I agree with tt. Where is a good big warning symbol, but not the shake and mild correction I like on my Mazda. I'm also hunting for a way to turn on a beeper for the blind spot detection when I have the turn signal on and a car is in the blind spot. I want that. The little yellow light on the side mirror is inadequate.
I combed through the OM for a way to adjust the strength of the correction, doesn't exist. I have never felt it at all, and LDA has never made my long distance traveling as easy and relaxing as LKA did. The combination of LKA and DRCC is synergistic. I would just like to speak to the actual individual whose decision it was to remove LKA and ask why. What were you thinking? I just don't understand the thinking behind putting this in and taking LKA out. Makes no sense. Don't fix what isn't broken.
You sure you have traction control and vehicle stability control on? That's the main reason I posted that quote - so you would check all those conditions.
Yes, and just to make sure, I just went out and checked them again. Everything is as it should be for LDW to work. If it's working, it's VERY subtle, to the point of being undetectable.
Those that experienced LKA in the Gen 3 will see LDW w/ SA as a "step backwards". It's a more passive system than LKA (which, oddly enough, is what other manufacturers are going towards).
Hardware for an LKA-System is on board ,all it would need is a software Update, but obviously Toyota wants to keep the driver in control unlike the computer !
I don't think I'm ready for these systems that take control away from the driver. Unintended consequences. Warning is OK for me though.
LKA does not take away control from the driver. The best way to explain how it feels is to realize that there is a neutral position of the steering wheel that does not take any correction to maintain. Imagine that you are on a flat, straight road with the steering wheel straight ahead. You would not be exerting any force to turn the wheel left or right, you would just be resting your hands on the wheel because you're, well, steering. If that straight road makes a gentle curve to the right, you would have to turn the wheel against the pressure that want's to keep it straight to make the curve. LKA uses the camera to sense the road curve and moves the 'neutral point' naturally to the right. It just takes much less effort to 'keep in your lane' (hence the name) as it curves and you can, as the driver, move the wheel as you wish. At the end of a long road trip, you don't feel you've been fighting the road or the car to maintain position. If you haven't experienced it, the explanation doesn't do it justice. LDW w/SA doesn't hold a candle to LKA. I would trade it in a heartbeat, and I would certainly like to have words with the designer who actually thought LDW was worth substituting for LKA, because it isn't. Just my $02.
It's not the designer. The Prius is just getting the same feature as everybody else (TSS-P). It's the similar action when the Prius lost its dedicated 7" LCD and went with the generic Toyota LCD screen. Those that had the 2006-2009 Prius w/ backup camera said the resolution was higher than that of the 2010's nav screen. So Toyota made the decision to offer LDW w/ SA for every Toyota vehicle and the Prius just happens to be a by-product of that decision. LKA is offered on certain Lexus models but it's not differentiated - it's called Lexus Safety Sense +.
Well who knows, maybe they'll update the system, but I doubt it to happen before the refresh hits the market !
Watched your video, had there been a car in the adjacent lane, you would have posted this from the hospital. It makes its move far too late to do any good. LKA kept you in the center of the lane and beeped before you crossed the line, not when you are over it. We need a petition.
Don't worry I'm fine! Only uploaded the Video from youtube ! As I said before,Toyota obviously wants to keep the driver in control . On a picture I posted here, one can easily see how easy it is to manipulate LKA-Systems saftey check if hands are on the wheel by just placing a plastic bottle in between the spokes . You cannot fool Toyotas LDA as it won't stay in the Lane anyway, even if you somehow figure out a way to overcome the "hands on wheel check" it won't be of any use ! I personally like Hyundai system better, but I do also understand Toyota who especially in this country have been sued from drivers who were not man enough to admit to their own mistakes ! Just think about the legendary "Runaway Priuses"....
Thank you for the for the info on prine lka, I was going to trade my 2010prius for a prine, but i would like to have decent lka , like you said maybe a hyundai lka will be ok
I drove a Prius Prime 2 weeks ago. I tested the lane departure warning. I drove the car on the interstate put on the dynamic cruise control and engaged the lane departure warning. Let go of the steering wheel. When the car drifted to the white lane marker, the car was automatically nudged toward the middle of the lane. The car did not cross the white line. This is the same result I get with my 2013 Prius 5. Try it. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
