The Ioniq appears to be getting a 6.6kW charger. The current charger in the i3 is limited to 4 to 5 kW in order to prevent burning it out, but it looks like a 7.4kW one will be available soon.

CHAdeMO is used in Korea, but Hyundai likely thinks CCS will be the prominent standard for North America and Europe in the future. The only plug in available nationally with CHAdeMO is the Leaf. Outside the West Coast, how many CHAdeMO chargers were installed by Nissan?

While GM isn't installing CCS, I think VW will be installing a lot as part of their community service. It is the standard they support for their plugins, and they are claiming a major investment in them.

In comparison to the permits, installation, and the charger itself, the cost for a third party to support both is small.

Honda might be going CCS with the Clarity BEV, but it isn't going to be 50 state either way. I don't see Mitsubishi offering on the Outlander PHEV here for the same reasons the Prime doesn't have it, and they haven't announced any new BEVs. Unless, Toyota jumps in with a CHAdeMO plug in, that leaves Nissan as the sole manufacturer supporting it here.

i-MiEV is 50 state and has CHAdeMO, too, and still exists.

My 2014 BMW i3-REX regularly posts 7.2 kW peak charge rate:
In the summer heat, there are small bumps when the battery air conditioner runs to cool the battery such as between 18:10-18:20.

The BMW i3-REX shipped to North America have two AC-to-DC converters running in parallel. Interestingly enough, failure of one charger often leaves the car running because the L1 EVSE that comes with it only puts out 1.3 kW.

FYI, I've pre-ordered an Emotorwerks, JuiceCord Pro 20, that runs on 120-240 VAC, up to 20 A with metrics. Once it arrives, I plan to do a 'smoke test' with the OEM L1 EVSE to see if it will run on 240 VAC. Given most of the EU runs on 220 VAC, I suspect this is a safe test.

I see the article I came across about the failing i3 chargers and fix is now 2 years old.

    Merged.

Just found this, Hyundai Ioniq Electric car to get 200 miles of range 'soon'
The 2018 model will have a larger pack option. Expect it to lose some cargo space, I'd say.

There are many good things about the BMW i3-REX but lack of instrumentation is why I'm using recording EVSEs. So lessons learned:
    • 1 mile ~= 1% SOC (my nominal driving)
    • L1 EVSE (12 A, 120 VAC) ~= 4% per hour
    • L2 EVSE (30-31 A, 240 VAC) ~= 20% per hour
    • REX operations
      • 55 mph = REX power output, excess capacity, ~44 MPG
      • 65 mph ~= REX power output with sustainable reserve, ~40 MPG
      • 70 mph = REX power output standard day load, no reserve, ~36 MPG
      • 75 mph = REX + ~20% of battery SOC per tank, ~32 MPG

I think it will take awhile to sink into the public conscious that a BEV for the family's second doesn't need to have the longest range available to work for them.

I see the 2017 Leaf is the 107 mile range across the trims, but it still starts over $30k in MSRP, which doesn't include a 6.6kW charger. I think once a sub 150 mile BEV is priced around the base Prime, I think people will give more thought to how much range they actually need.

Go Hyundai !! There's no denying it ... despite their warts/baggage this company is FLYING ... their progress from nothing to serious competition reminds me of the early 1970's honda - 600cc air-cooled shopping cart sized junk - to current plush - safe - reliable products. Did anyone imagine back - when the 1st factory plugins rolled off the assembly lines duribg the 1990's - that South Korea would be giving the major players a run for their money?

Wow, Hyndai knocking all over Toyota! Hyundai Ioniq Electric beats Prius Prime, BMW i3 on energy efficiency

So first, we have a "Blue" Ioniq that's 58 mpg supposedly...now we have the EV Ioniq (mind you, small battery, no engine, pure EV) that 136 MPGe supposedly by the EPA again.

It almost sounds like gaming, but they are not the same vehicles, and whatever strategy the "Blue" Ioniq has (which is closer to the Prius than the EV is to the Prime) I'm sure Toyota could do.

Begs the question though, is this a serious contender for sure? I'm sure if the engine was taken out of the Prime, battery increased, it could almost match mpge...

Toyota has already acknowledged they need to follow suit w/ other manufacturers that are already building EVs, & that they are going to build at least one - again hopefully sooner than later.

That depends upon what contender means. With respect to industry choices, it looks more and more to be the "too little" compared to Prime as compared to Volt being "too much". Toyota strived for a balance, going for a "just right".

Wonder if this has anything to do with Toyota stalling on releasing "official" MPGe to the EPA website (fueleconomy.gov). Yes, Toyota has already told us EPA estimated numbers that even appear on the stickers of Primes on dealer lots.

But curious if Toyota is stalling to "tweak" their numbers after Hyundai commits to MPGe numbers. Toyota is typically conservative with fuel economy that they report to the EPA, so if suddenly the Prime got 3-4 more MPGe, it would probably withstand a testing challenge by the EPA.

Let's see what real world numbers we get for these models. Nothing wrong with friendly competition!

I thought the numbers on the sticker made them official.
