Featured Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?

One thing I do admire in the IONIQ is elimination of the 12V lead-acid battery with a DC-to-DC converter driven from some part of the traction battery. It is low hanging fruit that everyone has pretty well ignored. But this also begs the question of:

1. Where is the 1.5kW, AC inverter?
2. Where is the J1772 (or NEMA 5-15) to allow topping and preconditioning?
3. Where is the tow package?
4. Where is the rear wheel drive?

The Ioniq's double clutch transmission with manual mode might allow a greater loss of efficiency when driven hard.

No car in the US market is going to get a tow package in the foreseeable future. The majority of buyers that want it are also willing to get a crossover or SUV.
Front wheel drive has an efficiency advantage over rear wheel drive. It also has a packaging advantage for cabin and cargo space, and the battery.
For the others, have you shared your desire for such with Hyundai?

 

FWD's efficiency advantage over rear wheel drive is in two parts - the ability to regenerative brake more on the front axle than the rear, and drivetrain losses. However, a transverse mid-rear or rear motor drivetrain (as in the i3) won't have any more losses than a FWD drivetrain, and may actually have less, as the CV joints are being powered at straighter angles, due to the rear wheels not steering.

 

So riddle me this -
Then there's awd tesla - an 85 or 90kWh dual motor / awd has greater range than its single motor counterpart - even tho it's sporting the extra weight & hp.

The reason a dual-motor Model S gets more range than a single-motor version is that at highway speeds you don't need a lot of motor to keep going. So Tesla puts the rear motor "to sleep" and only uses the smaller, more efficient front motor.

Epa says 270 miles for the 500+hp dual 85 - & 260 miles for the <400hp single motor. Crazy!

Most cars, including the Ioniq, are front mounted engine though.

The answer is in the name; dual motor. It can mix and match motor input for performance and efficiency. Like a front mounted, FWD engine, they are also transverse mounted; the crankshaft output is parallel to the axle. A front mounted, RWD car has the crankshaft perpendicular to the axle. Diverting the output forces 90 degrees results in more drive train loses.

 

Opportunity lost, you could have posted a 'perpetual motion' joke about 'regeneration from one pair feeding the other.' <GRINS>

Truth is Tesla has the option of shifting traction to the most efficient pair in a way that is functionally impossible for mechanical systems to accomplish.

He is going to build an EV with a 4kw motor

 

I own an ev with a 5kw motor, can hit 45mph on s good day but slow as molasses, suites me well, bet I'm the only one though

 

Prius average is 4.3l/100km so about 0.8 litres less. 3000euros means break-even at 250 thousand km. At that odo records the Prius is still very young...

 

And also when colder weather cold be arriving without an average from over a year.

 

Purely out of curiosity, I want to test drive the Ioniq hybrid here in London, just to see how it compares with my Gen 4.

If anyone would like to me to check anything out for them in particular during the test drive and/or take a picture of something in particular, let me know.

So far, the pre-sales process is vastly superior to my experience with Toyota in the UK. I contacted them late last night on the Hyundai UK website to request a test drive, and first thing this morning, my local Hyundai dealer emailed to confirm they have the hybrid model available for a test drive, and that I should simply call them to arrange a time.
