Featured Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?

    who can say. For example some of the biggest Federal solar incentives were brought about during the Bush Administration. After all, you save energy - then that's more fuel to fight wars or whatever. Just saying, there's always a way to rationalize doing something good or bad.

    I like the regen braking paddle feature on three Ioniq. No reason why Toyota could not add this to the Prius.

    i like it for myself, but don't trust other drivers. someone behind me isn't going to have their foot on the brake in an emergency.:eek:

    In the BEV Ioniq, the paddle shifters change the amount of regen that happens without pedal input.

    Right now, on a Prius, if you want more regen, you have to use the brake pedal - B actually reduces the amount of regen (it does increase drivetrain braking, but it's through engine compression and frictional losses, not battery charging. If you want less regen, you have to use the accelerator or put it in neutral.

    I for one don't care about the inside of the IONIQ. It seems very old school without digital dials (and how will they display their Eco Score?) It looks even more old school than Honda Civic Hybrid.

    What are you referring to? The Ioniq have, starting from middle trim, a 7" TFT dash that change completely when you shift in "Sport" mode, showing revs in the center, and an 8" central dashboard with android auto and Aplle car play....

    Here you can identify the 7" screen of the digital dash that changes completely depending on the mode:

    Yup - but the counter point is that when you only have 1 - 2mpg or so better - the % of 'better' is almost nil. (ie; ~1%?)
    In such instances what will really make the difference is seating capacity, Comfort, handling, power, price, looks, options, how they are packaged Etc.

    I guess I'm used to seeing Toyota's meters and the Volt's pretty good as well (Energis also).

    We'll have to wait and see. It still looks Honda Civic'ish.
    +1 for Android Auto though.
    +1 for ridding of the 12v battery.
    +1 for having 5 seats
    +1 for potentially having 31 miles EV the Plugin Hybrid version?
    +1 for potentially besting MPG of the Toyota Prius Eco? Is there a windshield wiper with that?

    HILL, not if you cannot live with a barebone ECO trim and not if you live outside the only country where the ECO is sold, US.

    In the rest of the world, and in US if you buy the Prius 2,3,4 with the 15", the comparison look like this:

    Ioniq 15" vs Prius 15" (US Prius 2,3,4)

    City: 57 mpg vs 54 mpg

    Hghway: 59 mpg vs 50 mpg

    Combined: 58 mpg vs 52 mpg

    Not exactly peanuts...

    It would be most likely it has a rear wiper. After all the rear window isn't concave
    .

    It is not a very big loss. The area cleaned by the wiper is quite minimal.

    Well, real world numbers look like this (out of 78 european units mixed 15" and 17" 4th gen Prii)

    Consumption: Toyota - Prius - Spritmonitor.de

    (4.3 l/100km = 54.6MPG)

    I will certainly be here to see if those peanuts are on the "right" side of the balance. Time will tell.

    Real world seems likely to vary according to driving styles, outside temp, a.c. use etc, so imho very broad brush. Toyota Brochure I have says official figures ( which of course have their ow limitations) for the Gen4 are

    Combined 94.1
    Urban 97.4
    Extra Urban 91.1

    For 15 inch wheels.

    Are we possibly getting US gal mpg figures on the Prius in some of these posts.

    Looking at the different drivetrains, seems to make sense to me that the Prius will be more efficient around town, and the Ioniq will be more efficient motorway journeys.

    Toyota Brochure says NEDC values, which are even further away from real world MPG numbers.
    Those real numbers have the register of different 78 users, many of which are German, and includig cold soak, AC, longer and shorter trips.

    Just for comparing...

    (450 users Prius 2010-2015) - 5.02l/100km = 47MPGUS = 56MPGUK

    The 58mpg is higher than what Hyundai was claiming at the beginning of the year and this thread, but I don't they would risk another incident over the posted MPG values. At least so soon.

    Regardless of how you play the MPG numbers, I really have to hand it to Hyundai. Looks like they have come up with a SERIOUS contender here.

    We currently have two Hyundai vehicles ( a 2012 Sonata Limited and a 2013 Elantra GT hatchback ). They have been rock solid mechanically. They also offer tons of value for the the money.

    If they offer the 10-year warranty on the IONIQ, I feel they have a winner. If they also include a 'lifetime' battery warranty to the original owner, it will be a clear value differentiator over Toyota.

    At any rate, the IONIQ is now on my short list!
