Best way to drive my route to work?

    I just purchased a new Prius and am clueless. Given the elevation below of my 34 mile route to work from left to right, how can I best drive my 2016 Prius two eco without frustrating other drivers? I understand the very little about pulse and glide and ev mode. Thanks!

    How did you generate that graph? I would be interested to see what my commute look like although the hills are not as extreme as yours.

    I am trying to learn my Prius Two after driving my route with a Corolla for a while.

    Google earth on a desktop. It's free to download. I created a route with my commute on that. It's not perfect so I had to modify it slightly as you see. I figured that may give people here an insight about my commute and hopefully can help me learn how to drive it since I'm new to a Prius.

    I don't know how well the third generation handled it but my Prius seems to have the pulse and glide thing automated pretty well. I wouldn't worry about it. Just drive carefully and don't get other drivers upset.

    I agree
    The DRCC cruise control works quite well. It works a little differently on hills, though. It accelerates uphill and brakes downhill. That might irritate some drivers following you. The cruise control slows down if the car in front is slower. I leave mine on maximum distance.

    I think the 2016 Prius Two Eco has DRCC.

    EV mode is mostly a gimmick, you can use it to sneak in at night, late or to move your car in the driveway, but it rarely improves MPGs.
    Never pulse and glide in traffic.
    Drive the speed limit, or a little over if that keeps you in the flow of traffic.
    Any car, Prius included, gets poor MPG when accelerating, so accelerate reasonably fast so you can cruise longer.
    If you can coast to stops, do so. if you need to brake to stops, long gentle braking recovers more energy than abrupt braking. There is no prize for being the first one to get to the red light.

    I just drive mine in Eco mode. I press the pedal harder if I need more acceleration. Of course, I have my Heating.Air set in Eco mode too.

    I also recommend that you first drive normally for a year or two, and learn what your Prius likes to do. Most of the time it knows better than you which mode is optimal for conditions, and will automatically switch back and forth to optimize mileage. Don't fight your Prius. First learn what it does, then you can work together with it and help it do its thing.

    Otherwise, do the same as for any car:
    Keep the tires pumped up.
    Look ahead and anticipate to minimize braking, except when people behind you want to get through the green light too.
    Go with the flow of traffic.
    Accelerate with medium power (not very slowly) when opportune.
    When you're at the front when the light turns green, let your Prius show them that it's no slowpoke off the line.

    Never stop for a red light the guy behind you runs.

    Do not treat the Police with any special respect: Treat them like any other group of heavily armed men operating with too little sleep and too much coffee.

    I'd agree with all the above - drive it like you'd drive any car initially, particularly bearing in mind Fred_H's suggestions. You'll still get verrrrry good MPGs.

    Personally, I put it in DRCC mode and "just steer" (an overstatement) almost all the time. Lazy - probably. But I also love the way the technology works. DRCC needs good concentration - you need to be ready for the very odd occasion you need to intervene.

    I've found it's more responsive in PWR Mode & DRCC seems to respond better. Forget about EV almost all of the time.

    Pulse&Glide is like a game you can play once you get used to the game board after at least a few months of just driving and enjoying your car. Like Solitaire, it's best played by yourself when there isn't traffic around to annoy. It's easier to play once you understand the PRIUS, and may give you slightly better MPG. Pulse&Gliding is actually easier to play with the car in ECO Mode, as the accelerator is more sensitive to small movements - it can be a bit tiring on your ankle if you play for long sessions.

    That includes some less than level roads through West Virginia.

    Drive like you normally would. Driving slow annoys other drivers. You'll easily get at least the EPA mileage when driving like normal.

    I appreciate all your feedback! I definitely will drive like i normally would for now. I don't have the radar cruise control in the two eco. But learning what the car does with the battery and motor at different times is enough for me.

    Following on from the autocorrect blooper, I was typing an email (on my pad) the other day and it auto corrected one word to Bisco. And it was nothing to do with PChat.

    Auto correcting phone & tablet keyboards are the worst offenders these days, I think.
    I have enough work correcting my own typos without having to fight the device too.
