If I turn on the heat and defroster then turn my car off, when I turn it back on only the heat is on. Is there anyway around this so when I use my car starter it will defrost without me going out?

It's configured to shut off when the car is powered down. There is a reason for that. The battery would drain in a matter of a few minutes due to the ICE not running and charging the battery. The electric window defogger draws a lot of amperage.

Actually, no. No battery drain will occur when the car is turned off. Oh, and the rear window defogger draws a lot of -current-. There is no such thing as "amperage". ;)

The rear defroster on the Prius, like on just about any car, is run through a "latching relay" system. You can turn it on when the car is on, but it will turn off automatically after some period of time, and when the car is turned off. This is done for a very good reason. If you left it on, as people are wont to do, it could cause problems in the long term. The reason is it can get quite hot, and over time will deteriorate. There have even been cases where the connections to the heating element have loosened and caused a fire, though I'm not aware of this happening in the Prius.

So while you may think it's "lame", it's normal and done for a good reason. Those of us in the north just have to remember to push a button if/when we want to defrost. :)

you can easily override it by a remotely controlled finger pushing the button. I'm surprised you didn't think of that, LOL.
