The source has a double "**" that my spreadsheet doesn't handle. I'll have to fix it, the spreadsheet, later tonight and post an update next month. I won't get it fixed before I lose the ability to edit the first post.

I am looking forward to the effect of universal TSS-P on sales.

Tesla had a good month and this will angst the 'short sellers.' The RAV-4 appears to the hitting a plateau after a remarkable sales growth. The Honda Accord "s*cks less."

The 2017 i3 has a larger battery option. Perhaps it hasn't arrived yet, and buyers are waiting.

I am confused about Sept car sales...one thing is PHEV sales should be increasing in CA due to the green HOV stickers. I have felt all year that some (eg; lease companies, auto companies) knew the green stickers were coming so I felt that explained some of the CA PHEV sales pre-Sept.

It takes about three months to see a true trend. That is why I used four months in the table.

The announcement of extending the sticker numbers was only recently, or perhaps you have overestimated the effect the stickers have on nation wide sales.

At this point, I don't we could tease out if an increase in the next couple months is due to the stickers, or from people getting plug in for the tax credit.

News reports on the brake recall talk about 340K 2016/2017 Prius liftbacks being recalled globally. Since global 2015 sales were only 203K, sales of the Gen 4 are up very substantially. Japan accounted for 212K, levels not seen there since 2010. Sales outside Japan and the US (i.e. including Canada, Europe and Other) are 34K, already up 119% since last year. Despite negative stories saying otherwise, Prius sales are very healthy.

Keep in mind that a recalled car doesn't need to be a sold one. How many are simply sitting on a ship or dock right now?

But yes, gen4 was a big hit Japan, and dieselgate backlash could be pushing people into hybrids in Europe. Cheap gas is an issue in the US, but the increase in SUV and crossover sales aren't just limited to large models. The Rav4 hybrid is doing very well here, and there is a wider selection of models smaller than the Rav4.

that's still partially cheap gas. even though they are much better than larger vehicles, those vehicles also get a bump from 2 bucks a gallon.
many people will look at a 35 mpg vs prius at 50 and say it's not worth it. but a 4 bucks, there will be less with that attitude.

More Prii will sell with $4 gas, but I'd bet Rav4 hybrid sales would increase at a greater rate. Same with the Camry and Avalon hybrids. While Toyota handling to make the Prius more attractive to other buyers, it and the Prime both have that stand out styling. A return to high gas prices in the near future might help the Ioniq and Niro out more than the Prius.

Hah, ok, there is always a "in the future" answer for some remarks.

Example: Ioniq has been proposed to the Car of the Year 2017 award. Deliveries will (in the future, ditto) start in early 2017.

Seeing how gas here is around $2 a gallon, I assumed my post talking about $4 gas would have been taken as in the future.

Seeing how gas here is around 1,45€/litre ($1.57/litre) meaning $5.94/gal...The future was already here and many didn't notice... :D

Sometimes europe today seems like america's future, Sometimes the past.

Politics and opec being as they are, I see oil heading slowly to $70/bbl. That means more expensive in europe in the future, but in the US, well bellow $4/gallon for at least the next 5 years absent something big and unexpected happening.

That could be true for telmo744, but in UK the GB pound has fallen near 30% against the US$ and the price of oil is always the good ole greenback! The euro is presently not as weak as the pound in the exchange rate mechanism.
