You could be forgiven for thinking that, but consensus elsewhere on PC suggests that newcomers to Prius having come to rest and hearing no ice noise might easily believe everything was off. Only the small D on the display would indicate it was still in drive and ready. Hope that helps..

    Status
    Remedy Not Available
    Description
In the subject vehicles, there is a possibility that the parking brake could become inoperative. If this occurs and the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in a gear other than "Park" while the ignition is on, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash. If this occurs and the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in a gear other than "Park" while the ignition is on, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy
Toyota is currently preparing the remedy parts for this condition and will provide additional information as it becomes available. The remedy, when available, will consist of installing clips on the ends of the parking brake cables to prevent the ends of the parking brake cables from disengaging from the crank levers on the rear brake calipers.

I don't either. The more information we have about any recall the better I feel.

That said, it's better on the park pawl to use the parking brake, and it provides redundancy.

Also, in some braking systems (not sure on the Prius, I'd guess Gen 2 would be most likely to be helped, as it's got rear drums), the parking brake helps to adjust the rear brakes.

Much to my surprise I went to the Toyota website, entered in my Vin number, and saw that indeed I am eligible for this parking brake recall but that wasn't the surprise. The real surprise is there's front passenger airbag recall that I am subject to as well. This one worries me a little more because I'm afraid they'll tear the dash apart and they will never get it back together again at factory standard and it will develop rattles.

Thank you Brian. The FAQ link was the perfect post. The newspaper and online articles about the recall were terrible.

Oh dear, the link's not working for me. UK dealer reports only minor snags for our models though. :)

My own company conclusion is that they are doing this recall because of fear from what is occurring to FCA and their parking brake / shifter debacle.

I decided to take advantage of the 6Y 0% and all the discounts on the 16 vs the 17 -- told the dealer I wanted a low optioned 16 Black 4 Touring if possible. Found one w/Black Interior. Now they can't sell it to me .. the recall !

Don't know when they can .... Never a dull moment. I'm keeping my 2011 white five ..now w/150k .. going to keep it at a second house. I'm not sure what it's worth -- it's been a flawless car.

I picked up my car from its 15,000 mile service yesterday. They performed the parking sensor recall and told me that they did not have a solution for the parking brake recall. They didn't seem worried to let me leave without the repair in place.

The dealer told me Toyota did what he called a "stop order" .. they can't sell any of the affected cars until fixed.

wow, that is scary. so the factory's are shuttered, the existing cars are quarantined, and toyota burns while the engineers fiddle?
