check engine light on, shop said o2 sensor bad. 490 for part and 117 for labor (mentioning most places want 600 for part).

This seems way high - parts on the net are 100-200.

Thoughts? Where is this located - can I do it myself??

    Read the warranty booklet.

I think the O2 sensor would be covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty, 8years/80K miles.
Obviously you will have to go to the dealer to have any warranty work performed.
If you are out of warranty, you could ask Toyota Customer Care for assistance; maybe they will cover the repair (100%, 50%, etc), or maybe they wont.

Thoughts? Yeah, my thought is, "That's baloney."

The part costs around $100. It's not difficult to do yourself. There are lots of excellent YouTube videos showing the procedure.

However, I believe there may be two O2 sensors on the car. You can access all the tech info from Toyota for a $15 fee for a couple of days.

Bank 1 Sensor 1 is the Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor which is mounted on the engine and is easy to access and change. Sensor 2 is the O2 sensor downstream of Cat.

Should be on the exhaust manifold before the catalyst converter
