Great data! I couldn't help noticing that at 1qt/5K, by the time you reach 16k miles you've already replaced 3 of the 4 original quarts. If you get to 20k between changes with a good oil analysis, I think you can skip oil changes altogether, keep it topped off, and screw on a new filter once a year :)

I never thought of that...? Probably would still do an oil change...? still thinking :)
I'm at 16.2K now & have added almost exactly 3.0 qts since the last oil change.
I'll probably try to get to 18K before I change the oil - & of course send off another sample :)
I do know that it will use more oil on the interstate than it does around town.
Its been a while since I took a long trip on the interstate but a while back I calculated I was only getting about 3700mi/qt when driving long distances at ~75mph.

Now at 110k on my 2012 PiP. Oil changed with no noticeable consumption at my usual 10k OCI. Last change was on Valvoline 0w20. This time around, I put in the good stuff, Mobil 1 because it was on sale. I complement it with the cheapest oil filter on Amazon. Falling sharply to 20% EV ratio since DW has the longer commute and can't charge at work.

How much does that save you? Maybe a buck? I just can't see gambling over a trivial savings.

To me, it's not gambling. It's wasting money, otherwise.

The Toyota oil filter was designed and tested to handle a 10k mile OCI. Owners have confirmed the filter media won't tear or fold during this interval, nor will it leak around the gasket. Personally, I wouldn't take that bet with the cheapest oil filter on Amazon, especially with a filter that's not rated to 10k.

Try using a heavier oil like 5w-20,many have reported benefit.

except 5W20 is not much "heavier". 5W30 is more like it and 15W40 would be great.

I don't understand this survey. What I'd want to know is relationship between oil change interval and mileage at which the engine failed, as well as driving conditions. And you'd need data from at least several hundred cars; anything less is anecdote.

My 2012 Plug-in will hit 100K in a week and here's the list of repairs it's required:

    1) Nothing
    2) Nothing else

Have I voted? Have I voted? It's an election year, of course I'm voting! It's the most important election of our lifetime! Marijuana legalization is finally on the ballot, and you ask if I'm voting?

I also voted in your poll. 10K and no leaks

Might have missed it,but how many miles when you switched and any results since the switch, or is it too early to tell?

I switched at 50K miles on C and 60K miles on Gen III. Neither car is burning oil, so I am just being proactive.

Even the best laid plans go to waste sometimes though:(. Good move since you reside in a nice temperate climate.

If it does start to burn a little oil, there are plenty of things you can do to slow the burn;). But at a 5k oil change, it should take a long time.

Maintenance is not a repair. Replacing my tires at their normal replacement time -- around 60,000 miles -- was not a repair. Oil changes, scheduled filter replacements, those are not repairs. I've driven 100,000 miles with no repairs at all. Nothing has broken.

    OP here.
For the record, I changed my vote from no consumption to consumption as it started at 75000 miles. 10,000 OCI. Now, it looks like there is association of 10,000 OCI with consumption.

If there's anything that we've learned recently......it's the fact that there's a yuuuuge difference between voting and participating in a poll.
I always participate in the former, but very rarely in the latter.

    TIFWIW.....

    Updating my previous answer:

    120,000 miles.
    5,000 mile OCI. (company mandated)
    Zero detectable oil use.
Moderate to heavy vehicle use (NEVER buy a used work or rental vehicle!)

In my never to be humbled opinion, many of the people who develop "early onset oil use" do not monitor their oil levels.
All it takes is ONE service attendant not putting enough oil in the sump to turn a well-running ICE into one that drinks like a Senator and smokes like John Wayne........

    YMMV

Wrong assessment in regards to myself. You would be hard pressed to find someone maintaining cars more than myself.
