are you saying running ICE is better than the battery in stop and go traffic?

no. i don't know which is better, or more efficient if that's how you want to look at it. i'm just saying that moving thousands of pounds from a dead stop over and over takes a lot of energy.
that's why the premise of the article is 'no stops'.
17 mph is great, but 17 mph average can also be horrible. especially in l.a., where road rage can kill you.

That's all true.... especially the road rage part. Still, I can usually get a pretty good coast-down to almost stopped.

By working it right, and with a little luck, it is often possible to keep a steady 10 mph for the last 10 miles into downtown LA.
And, aero drag is not the swamping factor in this unusual circumstance.

I get there the same time as everyone else. A fact lost on most (not all) of my fellow commuters.

    Kind regards, Steve

What's the usable battery of the current pip? I thought it was 3.3. Anyone know if the primes usable battery is just double or is it more. Does it make sense to put a %of the battery in reserve or only a set amount?

I think Chevy is one to change it up a bit from Gen 1 to 2...ill have a pic of my supposed calculated ev range in my pip. I suspect some enthusiasts would not be impressed but others would freak ;)

Knowing how Toyota routinely understates, it makes sense that we'll actually get more EV miles than what's officially stated. The math seems to suggest that too.

    Volt gen-1 (11.2 kWh of 17.1) = 65%
    Volt gen-2 (14.0 kWh of 18.4) = 76%

    Prius PHV (85% SOC - 23.5%) = 61.5% EV
    Prius PHV (85% SOC - 18.0%) = 67.0% EV+HV

We can see there's opportunity to use more energy from the battery, that a longevity-buffer so large probably isn't necessary.

In other words, the doubling the original 11 miles to 22 because total capacity grew from 4.4 kWh to 8.8 is likely on the low side, especially since we know the efficiency of the system itself has improved.

So in a prime... If I drive it the same should yield me 37+ ev miles? ;)

i think so. i figure if i can get 15 miles now, 30 should be doable. and more, if toyota programs more battery % use.

Well if Consumer's Reports can get 28 miles of EV with the way they drive cars, I'm expecting a lot more out of you @bisco.

Of course they haven't released official EPA estimates yet for the Prime.

Does this mean I can get 39 ev miles out of a prime if I drive it the same way?
